Rotavirus...aargh

My DD (17mos) has probable rotavirus - had vomiting and high temps on Monday and now has terrible diarrhoea, was up half the night with it. She saw the out of hours doc on Tuesday night but wasn't too bad as she was between the diarrhoa and vomiting. Anyway she is not dehydrated so far and we are getting fluids into her - Dioralyte. Am a bit concerned as she was very thin to start with and is now looking seriously skinny as she hasnt eaten for days..she tries to eat a little biscuit or something and it sparks terrible diarrhoea. I am going to chat to the duty GP later, but just wondered if anyone has any tips/stories/ideas about this, its awful for us and her.

  • I meant when she saw the doc on Tuesday she was a bit better as the vomiting had stopped and the diarrhoea hadn't yet started.

It is awful, dd2 had it in November and looked like a little spider after two weeks of V then D...but she regained all the lost weight and more very quickly, and so will your dd. She was 11 months at the time, and its scary - but as long as she's hydrated she'll be fine. Might take a while to get her energy back though.

Hugs for you and get well LO

Ds2 had it 18mths and ended up in hospital due to dehydration. He was back up to weight in no time - forget about food for now and just keep getting the fluids in.

Thanks...its such a relief to hear her singing away and sitting playing with her toys, she still isn't eating but I'm sure she will - still has horrible nappies and is not eating and look exhausted so she is no way over it completely but MUCH better than she was - what a horrible thing it is!

She will be fine - the fluids are the important bit, food will come soon.Glad she's a bit brighter.

Elibean · 10/04/2008 11:52

Glad she's on the mend

HereComeTheGirls · 10/04/2008 11:59

Well i hope she is on the mend, still doing constant watery poos, but I hope the brighter mood means she is feeling better

I just want to bump this, as after sleeping through she woke up with diarrhoea again, and then had it 5 times and also threw up everywhere, would only have a little bit of water, and went back to sleep again. She was trying to play but too tired and kept lying on floor She wasn't dehydrated before going back to sleep but I am stressing a bit now, this is just going on and on.

rotorvirus has a particular smell to it and would, gerenrally, require a sample before a dr would specify.

fwiw you can be vaccinated agaist it.

DS ended up in hospital for 5 days with this aged 18mths, went downhill very quickly. He ate on and off but please keep an eye on your poor lo.

Keep an eye on how her breath (and urine) smells - if at all acetone or pear drops call and speak to your GP.

If she persists in being sleepy and floppy I would go back to the GP anyway.

I hope she feels better soon.

HereComeTheGirls · 11/04/2008 14:40

Yes, thats why I said "probable" rotavirus, as thats what the out of hours Dr said when he saw her on Monday

It definitely has the yeasty rotavirus smell I have heard about.

Thanks, I will definitely keep an eye on her, am just really waiting for her to wake up, if she is very sleepy and floppy and wont take water I will get her seen.

Actually it is now yeasty but it was really fishy at first..most unpleasant..I don't really know what rotavirus would smell like.

I meant her poo smelt like that, not her breath!
