Ear Snot! Help!

DD (17mths) has a gooey ear. We noticed it last night - DH did her bath and thought it was cheese sauce so just cleaned it out but half an hour later when I was putting her to bed I scooped out some more goo with my finger. It's just one ear and it's the colour and consistency of quite runny snot!! I didn't find any more today but DH found more when he was putting her to bed tonight.

What is it??!

Her eardrum has probably burst as she has had an infection.
Don't worry though, worst is over.

What moondog says.

My GP did prescribe ABs for it as the goo was green and copious.

Has she been ill? I'd consider seeing GP tomorrow if there's any more.

She's been a bit poorly but we've put it down to the end of a cold and another tooth coming. She did keep putting her hand on her ear a couple of days ago but she does that to tell us when she hears something (like a dog or car)!! I feel awful that she might've had an ear infection and we didn't know

Will ring GP in the morning. Thanks everyone, knew I could rely on MN

The same thing happened to DS2 last night after he'd been ill for a few days. We also thought it was teething or a virus thats going round the nursery.
Snot from his ear. I knew it was a burst eardrum straight away as I've had it happen to me twice after badly congested head colds. VERY PAINFUL as the infection builds up. He has just slept all day today after we got antibiotics - the pain of the infection building up must have been keeping him awake the night and day before.
Childrens eardrums heal quite quickly so its nothing to worry about when they are younger but you can't go swimming and have to try and keep water away from it (ie be careful washing hair) for a while.
Don't try to clean it out, the gp said even the treatment room nurses are not allowed to poke about in the ears of children under 2. We have to take him back in 2 weeks to check that its healed and also so they can inspect it - doc said today that he didn't want to put the viewing thingy in the ear and wouldn't be able to view the eardrum properly anyway for all the goo.
Oh and wash the pillow, pillowcase and sheets on a really hot wash tomorrow if the puss gets on them as its infected.

The worst of the pain and discomfort is over once its popped so just let her sleep it off she will be much better tomorrow - ds2 certainly is!
When it happened to me each time I could tell the eardrum had popped as it was like a very long wet fart coming out of my ear!!
