He's 4 months. His temp is 36.7 (underarm. He's coughing quite a bit, but seems happy in himself. He has done LOADS of poo over the last 2 days, so i guess he has an upset tummy - but it's hard to tell as it's always runny cos he's breastfed. Oh, and he's maybe teething. And he's been sneezing a bit.

It's the coughing that worried me. Please tell me i'm being neurotic and he's fine!

teething - DS has toxic poos when teething?

keep an eye on his temp tho'

is he feeding ok? More lethargic than usual?

He is probably coughing from all the snot he is swallowing

FWIW, if you are worried call NHS Direct or your GP out of hours service (esp if his temp goes up a lot)

Twiglett · 09/04/2008 20:39

he sounds fine

the filling nappies, happy in himself and low temp (check also by kissing the back of his neck, does it feel hot to your lips? then he's got a temp) would say he's fine probably with a cold

but listen to your gut, if you're worried get medical advice

Slubberdegullion · 09/04/2008 20:40

I think he probably is fine (his temp is fine). But if you are worried, phone your out of hours GP and have a chat with the duty doctor.

cc21 · 09/04/2008 20:41

It is probably nothing. But if you are worried go and see your GP. I have a couple of times and it has always turned out to be nothing.

I once sad to my GP that I was never sure when I should bring DD, he said if you are worried its a good enough reason to bring them in. He is very good - hope you have similar GP

VeraSquonkTheBeerGuru · 09/04/2008 20:41

If he is teething, then it would be quite normal for his poo to be a bit more runny than usual, and for him to be generally under the weather.

It's probably nothing much to worry about. Does he feel hot to the touch?

You could give him some calpol/medised. Just a tidgey bit, as he's so little.

If you're worried about his cough, take him to the docs, but unless it is impairing his breathing, tomorrow will be fine.

If he is struggling to breathe because of the coughing, take him to A & E.

gingerninja · 09/04/2008 20:42

As the others have said.

Can you raise the head end of the cot up a bit, perhaps onto books? just to give him a slightly elevated head which might help with cough or/and snot issues.

VeraSquonkTheBeerGuru · 09/04/2008 20:42

good idea, ginge... or you could put a pillow underneath the mattress - it has the same effect of lifting the head end up.

sushistar · 09/04/2008 20:50

no, he can breathe fine, and i guess he'd show in his behaviour if he felt bad - he's quite chirpy! i might take him to the gp tomorrow just to check his cough tho.
he's feedig ok, that's the main thing right?

sushistar · 09/04/2008 20:51

the last few nights he's been in our bed as he's been grizzly, but if he'll sleep in his bed i'll try the raised head thing.

Thankyou all!

VeraSquonkTheBeerGuru · 09/04/2008 20:53

well, breathing is a little bit more important than feeding

But yeah, if he's feeding ok, and he's ok in himself then there's probably nothing too serious wrong with him.

BUT you are his mum. If you are worried, then get a doc to see him.

sushistar · 10/04/2008 10:31

So...

He fed well in the night but was very very very sick - had to change his sheets.

Then he slept well this morning so thought oh, he's ok, and didn't phone for gp appointment.

He's still asleep. Been asleep for a looong time now. I''ve fed him in his sleep, and he's wriggling now and again, but still sleeping.

Now wondering if I should have gone to drs. Or maybe all the sleep is good as it's his way of making himslf better.

I totally forgot to say - he had his 3rd lot of jabs yesterday. That's probably why he's sleepy, right?

sad bump - please reassure me!

call the gp and ask them, don't sit there worrying. They will be more than happy to see a 4 month old baby.

catchingzeds · 10/04/2008 10:50

I would definitely call them, you're worried enough to post on here. JodieG1 is right too, they are always happy to see a young baby and won't think you're a neurotic mother

nervousal · 10/04/2008 10:57

When DD was that little she was often sick when she had a cold/cough. Especially at nights/after a feed. I think it was because lying down made her cough and coughing made her sick. Very worrying at the time - but nothing serious. If you feel worried take her to drs

sushistar · 10/04/2008 16:32

thanks all. I took him - gp reckons he's got croup, and she said it was fine to take him whenever i was worried.
