Would you think it's okay to go on holiday the week before a planned surgery for nasal polyps? Or better not to?

Hopeful bump

Why wouldn’t you?

DottyLS · 25/06/2024 18:34

Risk of DVT apparently?

OP posts:

You’d be more at risk afterwards surely?

SwedishEdith · 26/06/2024 11:12

I would but make sure you tell your travel insurance. I wouldn't want to give them any opportunity to wriggle out of covering you for anything because you didn't declare something.

BloodyAdultDC · 26/06/2024 11:26

You'll be under GA for 30 mins and totally mobile almost straight away.

DVT is a complication of GA as well as long distance travel, but there is lots you can do to mitigate the risks.

Spoke to someone today who mentioned the risk of infections and how that could lead to delay

Delay in what? Infection is always a risk post-surgery but this is really minor surgery.

The risk of DVT is also very small, do you have any other co-morbidities that suggest grave risk? Are you flying to your Holiday destination?

...are you seeking help for your anxiety?

RandomUsernameHere · 26/06/2024 15:22

I think OP means the risk of infection before the surgery, which could lead to it being delayed.

Greybeardy · 26/06/2024 15:39

although the risk of getting an upper respiratory infection on a flight (guessing it’s a holiday abroad you’re talking about?) isn’t terribly high generally, if you’re unlucky enough to get sat very close to someone shedding germs the the risk is quite high and the operation will most likely be postponed if you have a viral infection because of the risk of operative site bleeding and airway irritability.

Pritas · 26/06/2024 19:35

Is it urgent? If so you might want to delay the holiday in case you pick up a virus. If not then you should go. If you catch something the OP would be delayed.
I doubt you would get money back on travel insurance unless you advised by doctor not to travel, and, you told had told your travel insurer you were awaiting surgery.

EasterlyDirection · 26/06/2024 19:42

I'd go but I'd be wearing the FFP2 or whatever they're called masks on the plane and using lots of handgel to minimise the risk of picking up an infection, it would be a great shame to have to cancel the op.

stressedespresso · 27/06/2024 21:15

Yes, of course it is fine. DD flew 3 days before planned major surgery - all with her consultant’s blessing. Wear a decent mask on the plane + sanitise hands frequently if you are worried re: picking up anything

HcbSS · 27/06/2024 21:17

Infections? You can pick those up anywhere. Unless you are planning on sealing yourself in a sterile tube prior to surgery, crack on and have a great holiday.
