Tooth extraction still sore 5 days on

Hello,
Not sure if this is normal or not? I had an upper tooth extraction on Wednesday, so 5 days ago. Although most of the soreness has resolved (I had referred pain on my lower jaw and it was very sore where I had the injections - the lower jaw pain has mainly gone although the injection sites are still sore), I still have some pain/soreness. The tooth next to the extraction site still feels sore but is slowly improving. The extraction site has throbbing on and off - not real pain, more that heartbeat in your tooth feeling, and there’s just a general feeling of heaviness or achiness around it.

Is that normal? I keep reading that I should have no pain by now and I keep worrying that it’s gearing up for dry socket, which I am terrified of.

My pain went on for a good week, with mouth soreness for a week after. That’s normal.

I then had ulcers in another spot as I think the whole trauma to the mouth caused some upset; so I saw a dentist after who said to do a gentle salt wash 3x daily. This can be normal but less likely.

After 5 days I’d expect to still be on pain killers

Also once the white stuff has healed over, you’re not so much risk of dry socket. I found I had a round of white stuff in the morning; new gum in the afternoon; more white stuff the next day; new gum in the afternoon and so on till about day 10 when it was entirely covered over with gum.

Thank you! This has made me feel less anxious. I was panicking because I keep reading about people with no pain at all after day 3.

Did your pain (well, soreness, pain isn’t entirely the right word) go up and down during the process? It barely bothered me at all on Saturday, then was worse in the evening, then done Sunday morning but annoying Sunday afternoon, fine in the evening, then sorer again this morning.

I think those people must have had smaller teeth removed; mine was the biggest tooth in my mouth 🥲 I felt the same and worried so much.

yes the pain did go up and down so I’d think, aha I’m over this now and then boom, back again. Same with the stiffness, that was coming and going too.

Good luck!

I'm still in pain three months later!! I keep getting small shards of tooth moving down the gum until they come out, each time stopping the gum from completely healing. Keep doing salt washes until at least day 10.

Thank you both! I feel much more reassured now.

@Puppupandaway that sounds horrendous though!

I’ve rinsed my mouth this morning and gross yellowy creamy coloured stuff came out - looked like a big tonsil stone but was clearly from the extraction site. Is this supposed to happen? Or have I dislodged something important?

Was it a big fang? I had a massive one taken out and it was sore for about two weeks.

This is connective tissue that is starting to turn in to gum. That’s what I had in the mornings. Don’t wash it away, it’s disgusting but necessary 😂 Rinse less hard haha

SisterAgatha · 25/06/2024 13:38

Mine was white though? Not yellow. All the Google pics had a mix of cream and white 🤢

QuickMaff · 25/06/2024 13:45

As long as you're not in agony after the gooey creamy stuff came out, then it's fine. The weird coagulated white stuff is just connective tissue. It's unlikely to become dry socket after 6 days though. Try not to dislodge it anyway because it helps the healing process.

And as for pain, yeah, mine hurt for bloody weeks, felt like I'd been punched in the face for about 2.5 weeks until it started easing. Mine was hurting more at the injection site too, the actual gum hole felt ok after a week or so. I had no infection/dry socket and it healed beautifully so I'm guessing it's normal anyway!

Hi,
im day 8 and I had pain for 5 days the first 3 days were a killer on a night I ended up having to sleep with a hot water bottle (not sure that’s even aloud) but I was in agony! And then then sometimes if the cold hit it it would ache again! Mine looks more are less back to normal now but I keep tasting a rusty metal taste in my mouth while I was sat earlia i spat out and it’s was like tiniest bit of blood tings Sylvia but no pain at all so I’m not sure if it’s an infection are weather this is normal did anyone else have this ?? The taste is awful x
