How long does it take for thyroxine to kick in...am on my knees!

HI

I know there's a few of you underactive thyroid women out there- need some advice.

Diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis after birth of babe 8 months ago. This has caused a goitre and underactive thyroid. Initially on 50mcg in Jan, after 4 weeks increased to 100mcg so now been on that since beginning of Feb.

But despite GP promising me I would feel on top of the world I don't! Am ok during the day but am dead to the world by 8pm most nights then have an occasional night where I cannot sleep at all (last night being one of those).

Still suffer from joint pains on waking, dry throat, dizziness. Waiting for test results fo Coeliacs and Addisons disease but would have thought I might have noticed some improvement in 3.5 months.

Anyone got experience of these symptoms and how long it took to get thyroxine levels right?

Thanks

Is your thyroid normal now? You may need upto 200mcg and that is why you may not be feeling better. I never had any symptoms at all but still needed 150mcg dose. Other ppl I know got really bad symptoms and only needed 25mcg dose. Think it depends on individual.

Hi

For me it was a gradual feeling better so it's hard to say exactly. I think I was certainly feeling some benefit in a couple of months (on 75mcg).

I don't think it's unusual for people to have more than 100mcg (I was originally told to expect 100-150mcg) so I would certainly press to get your levels checked again to see if you might need to increase your dose.

My TSH levels jumped around a bit at first:
91(yes really!), 1.something, 7.something (increased dose), 3.something, 1.something.

To be honest I think I'm going through another low patch, sluggish, slight weight gain, joint pain on waking.

If you haven't already, I'd definitely recommend doing a search on here. There are some fab threads with some advice I never got from my GP or Endocrinologist.

Hope you feel better soon.
