My skin massively overreacts to mosquito bites

Is anything I can do to speed up the healing process. The time line is I get bitten, usually on the leg, then I have days of low level throbbing and itching as it gets bigger and redder. Then it takes weeks to slowly calm down and fade away. It’s so unsightly i usually have to cover it with a plaster.

I never itch it. I just hate the time line of the thing. Probably get bitten three or four times a year.

Would it help if you took an antihistamine tablet, or used antihistamine cream on it? I also react badly to bites and find this does help me, but may not help everyone.

NowyouhaveDunnett · 22/06/2024 13:19

I take antihistamines and use hydrocortisone on it. Have suffered a lot in the past. I now live in a place that has mosquitoes all summer.

Prevention is better than cure though in my varied experience of being bitten in places throughout the world!

DH is the same. Mozzies literally fly over me to bite him and he swells up all around the bite.
Antihistamines do the trick.

Blueuggboots · 22/06/2024 13:29

Definitely prevent it!!
Take garlic capsules, vitamin b tablets, use good quality mosquito repellent and dress appropriately - loose clothing in neutral colours.
Look up mrs whites unstung hero.

imfae · 22/06/2024 13:33

I'm like this too . No mosquitos where I live but when on holiday in Europe I frequently get bitten . I have also had infected bites several times requiring antibiotics .
Anyone who has used the garlic capsules do they make you smell of garlic ?

Venetian mozzies are the worst I’ve ever encountered. It makes sense that an antihistamine would work.

BingoMarieHeeler · 22/06/2024 13:35

Same! Here for advice. My leg this week! (Pic of after it started calming down, obviously 😄)

Oh yep. Above pic was from 10 mins on a balcony in Venice 😂 got loads but that was the worst.

DoorPath · 22/06/2024 13:36

It's called skeeter syndrome. Applying an almost unbearably hot cloth to the site really helps (it's to do with the histamine response).

HcbSS · 22/06/2024 13:38

My mum is like this but only since menopause. Used to be fine.
only antihistamines work for her…

Busstopliz · 22/06/2024 13:39

Sadly taking antihistamines before I go on holiday has stopped working for me, it worked for a couple of years though. I use a Spanish baby cologne which does help plus candles and will take an antihistamine sometimes but less effective than before.

FunSquad · 22/06/2024 13:39

Try Avon’s skin so soft to keep them at bay. And a daily antihistamine every day for a month before mossie season and during to build it up in your body

Where are you buying Antihistan cream from? I can't seem to find it anywhere these days. My DH has a similar reaction to mosquitos.

gingercat02 · 22/06/2024 13:51

Same thing happens to me OP I take antihistamines and hydrocortisone, helps calm the reaction, but I'm always looking for the magic no bite solution

TripleDaisySummer · 22/06/2024 13:53

@captainsudoku

Though last time picked up a prescription in local Lloyds chemist was pleased to see it on their shelves.

DoorPath · 22/06/2024 13:54

@captainsudoku You can Google this in 2 seconds flat.

captainsudoku · 22/06/2024 14:05

No need for some of you to be so sarcastic, it didn't show up on Amazon for me when I searched earlier, and it hasn't been in stock in my local Boots for ages.

captainsudoku · 22/06/2024 14:06

TripleDaisySummer · 22/06/2024 13:58

Though clicking though all the buying options aren't available at moment - but got it there before but boots seems to be in stock.

Oh that looks sore and it’s probably warm to the touch. 🙁 I’m sure you will see loads of other tourists with their arms and legs covered. A Venetian one got me in the armpit once! I mean wtf?

v60 · 22/06/2024 14:17

Same. I've ended up on IV antibiotics because of the little buggers. Deet, citronella oils and coils. Burn your used coffee grounds or frankincense - they hate the smoke. Anti histamines and hydrocortisone. As soon as you find a bite, resist scratching it and put a teaspoon in some hot water to heat it up and the. put it on the bite, as hot as you can manage without burning yourself and then a dot of tiger balm.

Bumblebeeinatree · 22/06/2024 14:18

I have always had really bad reactions to all sorts of insect bites (like the picture above), I only recently 'discovered' the over the counter anti histamine tablets if I start taking them as soon as I'm bitten the reaction is a fraction of what it usually is. Actually life changing, it was getting to the point that I didn't dare go out at some times of year for fear of being bitten.
