Just asked my wife, a GP, says she gets £300 per session if she does a locum.

A 'session' being 4 hours, so £600 for an 8 hour day

So that will be for probably 8 - 10 hours work. For someone who is self-employed, has no job security, no employer's pension, no paid holiday or sick/maternity/paternity leave.

I don't think £100 per hour is at all unreasonable. Financial advisors charge three times that. If the NHS was a better employer it wouldn't have gaps and we wouldn't need locums.

Presumably then they would jump at the chance to become employed instead.

Surprised by this, as our surgery seems almost entirely staffed by locums at the moment. I've been 6 times I think this year and I've never seen the same one twice. Makes it really difficult as there's no continuity.

You're lucky. I ring up and I get a recorded message saying pick options. Then it says ring after 12, then after 12 it says the surgery is closed between 12 and 6 for whatever reason they've chosen that day. Then it cuts you off.

Don't actually think we have a GP surgery anymore. A different doctor each time would do.

There aren't any of those jobs either.

All that's available are jobs for non-doctors and non-nurses.

A session on a locum basis is paid by the hour which usually is a 3h session.
They charge £100 per hour. They will add also pension on top at 14.38%. Which practices need to pay.
If they are really desperate they should apply to the high number of jobs available on the RCGP website or BMJ.
Locums do not want work on Fridays, or school holidays. They also refuse to work a late afternoon session or early morning session. ( practice manager in a very big practice in London)

And if they run late - say patients needed more than the 10minutes - they will also add that on the bill.
Usually we book them for 3h but they only see 16 patients ( as they request 20 minutes paid break) and add another 30m because they run late.
As someone said earlier - practices are funded to have salaried GPs, not locums as they cost nearly the double.

AnnaMagnani · 22/06/2024 09:06

the high number of jobs on BMJ careers

Just checked, there are 75 GP jobs being advertised. 75 - across a whole nation!

And when you look through them, a lot are very part time, a large number of ads are for prison work, several are remote and rural - great but where is your partner going to work?, some aren't even for GPs..

And some of the ads that are for GPs are based in Canada.

So basically fuck all permanent jobs are currently being advertised.

BumBumCream · 22/06/2024 09:09

GP funding per head of patient is based on each patient attending an average of 4 times a year. But the average number of visits is now 8 times a year.

I agree that there are some GPs out there with unrealistic expectations.

But there are also now a lot looking for a normal salaried job, and many less jobs than people looking.

nearlysummerhooray · 22/06/2024 11:25

For example, on the londonwide LMC website there are currently 14 jobs. In the whole of London. There would usually be multiples of this.
