Has anyone managed to reduce their palpitations? What did you do?

I've had palpitations daily for years and years. Sometimes only a few per day, other times it seems to be every other beat. My heart has been tested multiple times and all seems to be well with it, GP has just ruled it as "one of those things".

They've always bugged me, but they're really bugging me recently (I think it's because I've just recovered from another annoying health issue and I half expected nothing in my body to bother me at all for a while Grin).
They're definitely worse/very frequent immediately after eating anything sugary or carby, so I'm going to cut down on that to see if it makes any difference. I don't drink anything caffeinated, no fizzy or sugary drinks whatsoever because that makes them worse. I don't drink alcohol at all. I'm generally active. I am pretty permanently stressed but I'm not actually sure how to limit that (it involves 4 young DC!) - would it make a huge difference if I somehow did manage to reduce stress?! I'm not particularly anxious or anything with it though.

Is there anything anyone has done to successfully reduce their palpitations day to day?! GP hasn't offered any medication based on them alone.

I went through an awful patch of them - was referred to the chest pain clinic (mine came alongside costochondritis) and had a thorough set of tests done and wore a 48 hour holter monitor. Nothing was found wrong, and once the costo started to subside, the palpitations gradually went too. I stopped all caffeine, and made sure I took a daily vitamin (am veggie). Still get the odd one but certainly nothing like they were.

Another member of the SVT gang here! I also have atrial ectopy and take bisoprolol x 3 per day which have helped.

Trigger - stress (being a teacher does not help!), hormones, heat, gin 🤣 and pregnancy.

I would say I try to drink more water but I would be lying to you! Basically, my heart has occasional blips and I now to remember it's a healthy heart but just has a funny five mins!

Cattyisbatty · 20/06/2024 21:46

Not being dehydrated is one for me. I recently found out they’re ectopic beats -, they were finally picked up
on 24 hour ecg after 20 years of getting them.

MessyNeate · 20/06/2024 21:47

Might be pots?

Water, hydration sachets and regular exercise has helped me x

Pritas · 20/06/2024 21:47

@wineandsunshine sums it up nicely. You've had all the tests, been reassured that there is nothing to worry about. Once I had that I learned to live with it and not worry.
I had EP study which showed my SVT was atrial tachycardia and not suitable for ablation.

Bet01 · 20/06/2024 21:51

I was diagnosed with SVT during labour 13 years’ ago. I hardly get any episodes now, sometimes when I bend down to pick something up it can kick in, but otherwise nothing. I managed it via cutting out sugar completely, that made a huge difference, and also lots of cardio/running. Now I’m pretty fit, and it’s basically cured it. Good luck!

Ok so going against the grain here

Have the heart palpations been recorded ? Or abnormal on a ECG?

If not, i would suggest other things apart from your heart to rule out

So i ‘had’ heart palpations with chest pain for a long time
Cardiac Ruled out via ECG and bloods

I had a camera into my stomach for something else.
They saw i had a ulcerated throat and a high up hiatus hernia
Suggested Omeprazole 30 mins before eating and not laying for 3 hours after food or drink
Well i havent had chest pain or a ‘heart flutter’ since

Im ofcourse not saying to get further heart tests if needed but maybe do think about other avenues too, because there is no way, i would of thought this was throat / hernia related

So I'm getting a list going of things to speak to the GP about and attempt for myself -

I'm going to get some magnesium supplements tomorrow and actually take my long forgotten Spatone that's been sat in my cupboard since last year. If it's magnesium related, how long before I should expect to see results?

I'm going to speak to the GP about it all again and ask if he'll do a blood test for me and check on all my vitamins and minerals and whatnot. I'm also going to mention POTS as I've just googled it and it does sound similar to what I experience! Particularly how the symptoms can worsen after eating carbs, feeling hot, being on period, not drinking enough etc! They do! I'd never even heard of it before.
Would thyroid issues flag up with a standard FBC?

Also heading to YouTube to look up vagus nerve exercises!

@dudsville Oh dear! How was it discovered? I have actually had chest bloods done recently (before discovering my problem was a dodgy gallbladder), would that have flagged something like that?
I do lots and lots of walking daily, not very often I do anything more intense though.

Weird, it was my gallbladder! I had acute cholecystectitus, but they did a heart ct scan to rule that out while I was on the waiting list for my gallbladder diagnosis. They caught the HD early so I'm OK but started cardio and a couple of months into that I realised the palpitations had eased up. Hope you get an answer to yours, my gp had never been interested in it prior and said it was just anxiety. I'm quite calm by nature so it was annoying.

muggart · 20/06/2024 23:15

Cardio exercise fixed it for me.

Also no caffeine and alcohol, but I suspect they were just triggers. The main thing is cardio.

Weirdly, I stopped doing cardio after a while for various reasons, and they didn't come back in that time. But I still think cardio is key to a healthy heart.

PanicAttax · 20/06/2024 23:24

No, it won't show on a FBC, you need to ask for a Thyroid Function Test.
Good luck!

I get palpitations when my iron levels are low. Has your iron been tested?

This is what happened to me, too. I had a 24 hour Holter monitor to make sure everything was in order; once my ferritin was in normal range, the palpitations drastically reduced.
They increased again last year, and again my ferritin is very low. I know what to do now...
