My teen has eaten some hotdogs from a jar that was opened weeks ago and kept in the fridge, I hadn’t realised they were still
in the fridge at the back. They were heated up to quite hot, but I know eating stuff like hot dogs that have been opened for ages is really bad. What should I do? Will she be ok? I feel absolutely awful I missed throwing them
out!

Well you can either get her to be sick and hope that works or be prepared for a bout of food poisoning. Probably too late now so plenty fluids and bucket at the ready!

Pantaloons99 · 19/06/2024 17:24

Just leave it and make preparations in case she's sick. Electrolyte replacement sachets, BRAT food for when ready to eat again.

Some people seem to have cast iron stomachs whereas others don't. She might be absolutely fine! But her body will get it out quick enough if it's dodgy.

Thank you, I hadn’t thought of the sachets. I just feel like a terrible parent 😞

Given they were already very processed and heated to a high temperature- and they must have tasted okay for her to continue to eat them after the first bite - I’d be surprised if she becomes very unwell. May be wrong though.

FictionalCharacter · 19/06/2024 18:07

Were they in the salt water? Good news if they were, because that preserves them really well.

ChrisPPancake · 19/06/2024 18:20

Agree with @Pigeonqueen

Anything that smells/tastes ok is unlikely to make you ill ime.

We also keep a Sharpie next to the fridge to scrawl opening dates on jars and then usually ignore them.

Floralnomad · 19/06/2024 18:22

I really doubt they will make her ill

Caravaggiouch · 19/06/2024 18:24

She’ll be fine if they were properly reheated, they’re stored in brine and are already heavily treated/processed anyway, and are the kind of thing that would taste off if they’d gone bad. Stuff like that lasts for ages. I'd say don’t tell her though, it might have a psychosomatic effect and make her feel sick if you do.

AmelieTaylor · 19/06/2024 18:25

@perimenopauseflushes

Stop feeling so guilty, she's old enough to heat them up, she's old enough to check for freshness!

if she heated them up properly chances are she'll be fine, there's more preservative & crap in them than actual food.

Hopefully she'll be just fine, get the sick bowl on hand but not in sight and start on a gripping box set, take her mind off it.

best wishes x

They're so processed there's probably not much to go off in them. If they're in brine even better.

I’m must be really awful then because I wouldn’t even worry!

I’m such a drama queen! I feel better now I’ve read your comments.
I had just come in from work and nodded off, then I woke up to the smell of hotdogs….then realised the only ones we had were the ones from weeks go in the fridge! I think my brain was still half asleep when I panicked.
They were in a jar and in brine and apparently she nuked them, they didn’t taste that bad apparently!

OP I am curious about the outcome -- was your DD ill at all?

Mandarina4 · 24/06/2024 12:23

Too late to the party but here are my two cents: most of the food we buy in the supermarket has so much chemistry inside that food poisoning rarely happens. Last week we ate a canned sauce that we thought had been opened the day before, but was actually in the fridge for over a month. The label said "eat in 3 days". The smell was good, the taste was good, none of us had a clue we were eating something so old until I found the new can we bought, unopened. None of us got sick.

perimenopauseflushes · 26/06/2024 16:18

She’s been absolutely fine! Not even a grumbling stomach 😂
