Weird tongue symptoms

About 6 months ago I got a weird fizzing feeling on the tip of my tongue and then it starting hurting as if I'd burnt it. Looked in the mirror and there was a big red patch. It carried on for a few weeks and in that time I went to the dentist who didn't know what it was and referred me to maxo-facial clinc.

Since then it has got a bit better and is no longer red to look at but I still get the fizzing/burning feeling every so often and also a weird bitter taste as if I have licked soap.

Went to the clinic appointment and they think it's burning mouth syndrome. I've had some blood tests which are all fine and now waiting for a follow up appointment. Was told they'd probably give me amitriptyline.

The weird thing is, I've noticed that it seems to come on when I'm anxious or stressed. A couple of weeks ago I got really anxious about my DD and instantly noticed my tongue burning. When I calmed down it went away.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this? The bitter taste in particular is very weird.

@Persianpuss Yes me, I have similar, but without any red patch or visible signs. I was also diagnosed with BMS by maxillofacial who recommended amitriptyline, but my Dr decided to prescribe nortriptyline due to supposed less side effects but it didn't do much for me. I suffered for years not realising amitriptyline would be different but when I eventually got prescribed amitriptyline by a different Dr it really helped, though it took a few months to get maximum effect. Yes, I got tingling and burning tongue more pronounced when stressed, it's awful, and of course the burning makes you more stressed, vicious circle. I didn't get a bitter taste but in the beginning water tasted sweet. I also developed gastric issues, lots of burping, it's hard to know if that caused the burning mouth, but PPIs and antacids didn't help at all. When it started I was suffering from stress very badly and also menopause, hrt didn't help either. I often wonder if I had been given amitriptyline sooner that I might not have suffered so much and for so long, who knows. Overall I just didn't find doctors very helpful with this. Hopefully your issue will get resolved soon with the amitriptyline but also relaxation techniques might help too.

Thanks, yes I really notice that it gets better when I don't think about it or stress about it. I took amitriptyline in the past for painful bladder syndrome but the GP told me just to take it as and when. When I saw the specialist again, with it not having improved much, he was annoyed that the GP hadn't told me to take it on a continuous basis as it takes time to build up and work. But it did eventually go away so I'm hoping it will help again this time.

I still think it's odd that I had a bright red patch though as everything online says there are no visually noticeable symptoms with BMS.

That's annoying about Dr's advice. Maybe you burnt your mouth or had an allergic reaction to something and it's triggered your nerve endings, I'm only guessing - sometimes we just don't know why things happen unfortunately🤷. Hope you get relief soon.

Do you eat lots of pine nuts? The bitter taste could be pine nut syndrome which can be counteracted by eating fresh pineapple.

No I don't eat lots of pine nuts! Can anyone afford (or want) to eat pine nuts daily? They're ridiculously expensive!
