Waking in night with nausea

I am 50. I occasionally wake in the night nauseous, and then I struggle to get back to sleep for 2 to 3 hours. I think it is related to when I eat fatty foods (but 9 times out of 10 when I eat them, I am fine, so I then forget!) I need to stay upright in that time, as lying flat is very uncomfortable. Sometimes before I go to bed I get a feeling that I may be in for a bad night, and then I usually am.

I have a large (silent) gallstone, am overweight (but not massively so) and am on HRT.

These episodes are becoming less severe but more frequent. It has been going on for four years or so. I had lots of investigations three years ago but they were inconclusive. Have a doc appointment booked for next week.

Anyone had anything similar? I find it quite difficult to articulate what is going on!

Should also say, when I wake up feeling nauseous, it is generally about two to three hours after I go to bed

I get this (I’m 62), it’s horrible. I’ve massively cut down my alcohol intake, reduced sources of stress in my life ( as far as that’s possible), don’t go to bed within 2 hours of eating, and watch out for trigger foods (potatoes and onions). When it was really bad I took Nexium (OTC) for a month, and that really calmed things down while I changed my lifestyle. It’s only very very occasional now, when I’ve broken my own rules!

Thank you for replying and good to know I am not alone, although sorry to hear you have similar. Do you know what I should describe it as?!

Have you tried gaviscon? When I first started getting reflux it took ages for my GP to recognise that's what it was, as I kept describing feeling a bit sick, rather than other typical symptoms of acid reflux.

It’s acid reflux, or GERD. I haven’t seen a doctor about it though.

Thank you both
