Lethargy, when to worry?..

DD 17 mos, started vomiting last night, cant keep anything down. Managed to drink a lot of water at 5am though then went back to sleep. Woke up hungry at 8 and had somemilk but brought it all back up. Then she was really really lethargic and just conking out on me, wanting to sleep on me. She is normally so active that the contrast is scary. I just don't know if this is a serious sign or if she is just tired due to being up all night being sick and feeling ill, like adults just want to sleep when tired. You can tell she is my PFB and hasn't really been sick before!! Should I leave her or call doctor?....

Lethargy sounds like dehydration. There is a special rehydrating powder you can get in pharmacies, which you can then mix into her water and propose frequently. And mix into her favourite yoghurt and feed it to her.

Sounds like a regular tummy bug, so don't worry too much. But you need to get her rehydrated. With diarrhea, it is not only water her body loses but essential chemicals like salt, so the rehydrating powder is important.

Does she have a fever?

well, the thermometer said no, but to me she feels boiling hot. I am never sure how accurate ear thermometers are in such a tiny ear!! I think I have some Dioralyte, sadly have to go to work this afternoon but my mum is coming and will give her that to give her. Thanks.

If she feels boiling hot, put in a paracetamol suppository.

Hope she feels better soon.

Sadly you can't buy paracetamol suppositories here, wish you could, she hates Calpol or any medicine and it makes her sick!

is she still having wet nappies?

are her lips cracked and dry?

My son had this last week and was admitted to hospital for dehydration. He was very very lethargic and floppy. He had to be put on a drip and then had to have a tube in his nose as he was refusing to drink. After 2 days in hospital he started to pick up, but it was the scariest time of my life. I'm a mother of 5 and my eldest is 23 years old so i thought i knew it all when it came to dehydration and was quite shocked that he became so ill so quick, they would'nt even let us take him to hospital by car, they sent an ambulance. I'm not trying to scare you but it is very important to make sure that try to get your DD to take some fluids in regularly. I would defiantely phone the GP to ask their opinion, especially about the lethargy.

I hope everything is ok and she gets over this quickly.

There must be paracetamol suppositories where you live. How else are you supposed to bring down a newborn's temperature?

luvaduck · 08/04/2008 13:08

if you are concerned take her to gp - just walk in say you are worried or get telephone consultation - they will see her
lethargy if dehydrated needs to be taken seriously esp if not peeing much/dry lips/not drinking enough etc
