Does anyone have a hiatus hernia?

Maybe 7 years ago, aged 35ish, I was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia. I had been experiencing heartburn so had an endoscopy and was told I had a very small sliding hernia which he was surprised caused symptoms as it was so small but he gave me lansoprazole which I've taken ever since.

Sometimes I take one every day, sometimes I take them once or twice a week, depending on my symptoms.

Over the last few months I've noticed I hiccup every time I eat or sometimes even drink! I only hiccup a few times, maybe 5-10, not painful or noisy hiccups, just a few quiet small hiccups and then done. But it's every time I eat.

Does anyone else get this with a hiatus hernia? I'm so reluctant to go to the doctor as worried they'll make me have another endoscopy which I did not enjoy!

I do suffer from health anxiety OCD so of course I've diagnosed myself with a range of different cancers...

I have a small sliding hiatus hernia, it was discovered by an endoscopy in 2013. I took omeprazole for many years but my hair got thin and it caused tummy upsets. I manage mine now solely through diet. Nothing fatty or spicy, not too much tea , coffee or chocolate as that causes flare ups. Eat bananas as they are natural anti-acid. I use a kally sleep bed wedge under my mattress (available in John Lewis) and I always sleep on my left side and that seems to really help me.

I did used to get hiccups from time to time. Are you eating too quickly? Are you drinking fluids with your meal? It is best to have a glass of water 30 minutes before your meal and make sure the water isn’t too cold as that can cause oesophageal spasms.

Easier said that done but try to relax and not worry as stress causes major hiatus hernia flare ups. My symptoms were always much worse when I’m stressed or anxious. Good luck with it all OP, and I totally understand about the health anxiety as sometimes I’m the same! I have to try really hard not to Google diagnose myself.

I was diagnosed with one maybe 8 years ago. Recently they said I don't have one. 🤷‍♀️I do take Lanzoprazole as I have acid reflux. I eat light towards the end of the day. There are certain things I just can't eat at night eg chocolate. Bread makes me hiccup. I also sleep on left side with double pillows to raise head.i keep Gaviscon in the bathroom and a cup of milk in case of attacks.

I have one too. It was diagnosed about 30 years ago and for most of the time since it's not caused any problems. More recently, though, I've developed an issue. Sometimes when I eat the food comes straight back up in (ugh) what seems like gallons of saliva (no acid), and I've had a couple of bouts of explosive vomiting.

I'm now waiting for a barium swallow to check for an oesophageal pouch.
