Have you used travel sickness patches?

Son is off on a school trip soon but gets travel sickness.

Doctor says OTC hyoscine hydrobromide patches are safe and effective.

Have you used them? How were they?

Tea-time bump

My child used them but not for travel sickness, they irritated his skin so we had to stop using them.

When I spoke to my GP, hoping to get the patches for my DD, and asking for them, she would only prescribe Kwells!

It is the same active ingredient, but I’d hoped the patches would be more effective.

Mine use the wrist bands with the pressure point. No sickness since.

Thanks for your thoughts.

The patches are OTC so can be just bought online. No prescription needed.

I don't think the bands will work - he's a guaranteed vommer.

We're going to try the patches for a couple of days before he goes, hopefully no irritation 🤞

Tablets not patches - but they aren’t side effects free. Make me very drowsy. Worth it when travelling when very prone to sickness but not something I’d give a child on a normal day.

i use bands and tablets. Tablets help lots. Bands help a little bit, but don’t wear off.

And it isn’t the end of the world if he is sick.

I use them. I get them off Amazon. I suffer with horrendous travel sickness and the travel sickness patches have quite literally changed my life. I can't recommend them enough (and I've found they're also quite useful at fending off hangovers)

WeakAsIAm · 12/06/2024 22:17

The patches were discontinued after the death of 2 children. It is unlikely you will be able to source them now.

PeonySeasons · 12/06/2024 22:17

I use them for sickness associated with my migraine, but they are impossible to get hold of at the moment due to a manufacturing issue.

Where on earth did you hear that?

Sorry, I use a different brand to those mentioned in the original post, but effective none the less

From a drug safety report - as a prescribed of these medications we are informed of serious events.

Thank you, but that says nothing about it being discontinued - only about clinical advice on side effects (none of which I have received since that was issued) and planned additions to the warnings on the safety data sheet.

I've been desperately trying to source it for months, and every pharmacist and GP I've spoken to (over 40 pharmacies!) have only said it's a manufacturer issue. Would have been nice to hear if there are serious issues leading to the drug being discontinued.

Can you link to them? The only ones I can find are herbal, not containing hyoscine.

OctogenarianDecathlete · 13/06/2024 20:21

Thanks all.

I did seek advice from an actual GP who recommended them. She wasn't concerned about side effects (the dramatic events seem to have happened when they are used off license).

It won't be the end of the world if he's sick. But 9 hours on a coach feeling unwell would be pretty awful.

I've seen the scopoderm patches - they seem to be on sale online.

What are the other brands please?

It seems this is the case. I can't find them online.

He'll have to stick to the tablets 🤷‍♀️

@Eliza121 which brand do you use?

I see some patches with ginger etc in them, but nothing with an evidence base.
