Oh agalch-please do go to A&E to get her checked out. Might just be a very bad strain.

Well got a call back, that's why i disappeared. Our out of hours servive is not at the GP's,it's at A & E.

If you just turn up you do have to wait for hours unless your legs hanging off at our local hosp.

We got an appt and took her down and bypassed the queues. A & E was chockers. £ drunks puking up and 2 thugs sitting in handcuffs with police escorts. Glad dd didn't have to listen to their effing and blinding for hours.

Anyhoo her arm is not broken and she has fairly good range of movement. But they want to see her at the fracture clinic on Thursday because she can't bend her arm in one small way.

I know you all must have thought i was daft not whizzing her down but from past experience i have had a few nightmares at A & E. It truly is better to do it the way i did it. I have sat with ds1 several times who was throwing up and screaming with acute renal pain (aged around 7-8) to be told we had to "wait our turn".

So a sling to be worn and pain relief given and appt on Thursday.

Thanks all.

i have done it your way before. you can't go to our out of hours doctors which is at the hospital unless your gp rings up first and gets you an appointment. our a&e has priority for very young babies, but after that you could still be waiting ages. a couple of times when ds has been having breathing problems we've rung the doctor who has then rung the hospital and we've been sent straight to the children's ward.

aGalChangedHerName · 08/04/2008 08:19

Glad someone else has an out of hours which operates this way Nappyaddict lol.

It does sound weird to folk but even a child in pain does not get any preferential treatment at our local A & E which is bloody shocking

Our local one is the same.
It is a PITA, but much easier ti actually have the appt.

Or we can drive to the next one, which is almost 20 miles, without an appt.

Glad it isn't broken.

aGalChangedHerName · 08/04/2008 08:27

It is easier to get an appt for sure but very annoying to have taken children in severe pain to wait for 4+ hours while adults with sprains etc get taken first.

But hey what can you do??

Update for anyone who's interested.

Took dd back today and the doc said her elbow has been slightly displaced or has a little crack that they can't see on the x-ray. There is swelling round the elbow on the x-ray which indicates the little crack theory.

To wear collar and cuff for 2.5 weeks and another appointment at A & E then discharged hopefully.

At least you know, so you won't keep worrying. Children bones do heal quickly, so that's a bonus!

Honneybunny · 11/04/2008 23:45

Good to hear that her arm's not broken, though those little cracks can really be very painful. She'll probably be able to tell from her arm that rain's in the air from now on (good carreer as a meteorologist, or weather girl? )...

We're in the same situation as you, this eve. ds1 (4y) pretended to be buzz lightyear (he loves toy story) on the monkeybars at the playground this evening. I tried the "fake bandaid", thinking that distracting him might help ease the pain, but even after two doses of nurofen he was still howling. And this is a boy, who normally doesn't "do crying" really. He went to sleep initially, but woke up at 11, screaming and in pain, and he looked as white as a sheet (was also shivering). So we called the out of hours (was also thinking about the drunks etc at A&E esp this being Friday night 11:30) and they said straight to A&E. So, that's were dh took him. Sure hope they won't be stuck there for hours! Don't have such good experiences with A&E either....

aGalChangedHerName · 12/04/2008 07:55

Aww honneybunny hope your ds didn't have to wait too long at A & E and that he was ok x

Thanks!
In the end they were back at 2am. They did lots of x-rays: he had a dislocated elbow, which was snapped back into place. It still looked quite swollen, and as if it has not popped back completely. Apparently at this age children's bones bend rather than break, so his bones at his elbow looked a bit crooked, and the x-rays did show a little crack in one of the bones, though not a real fracture. He will be seen on Wednesday for a follow up. Sounds very similar to what your dd has doesn't it?

Fortunately dh and ds were rushed into a special kids section at A&E and they were seen within 5 mins by a nurse, who ended up staying way past her shift was finished, as the nurse who replaced her was extremely busy. They also gave him a teddy bear, because he was "being so brave". From what dh told me afterwards, it sounds like ds was well looked after, adn the only reason for everything taking so long was because they didn't want to take any chances and miss any little cracks/fractures.

Thanks for asking, and i hope your dd is feeling better. How do you get her to take pain meds??? Ds1 refuses to take any (at A&E they had to give it up his nose) and now is even suspicious of his apple juice (we mixed in the ibuprofen with the juice)...

aGalChangedHerName · 12/04/2008 17:11

Oh poor little ds

Yep sounds familiar ouch. She takes meds really tbh, always has thankfully.

She has worn her sling thingy really well too, only takes it off to wash her hands etc.

We go back on the 29th of this month and see how her range of movement is and if it's not completley back to normal they will xray the arm again.

Hope our ds is better soon too xx
