Post Op Bleed - DH Tonsillectomy

Hi all,
hoping for advice and a hand hold, DH had a tonsillectomy last Thursday & has generally been okay, pain has been manageable with over the counter pain relief.

This evening at about 7.30, he felt a weird taste in his mouth and had to run upstairs, to be spitting out mouthfuls of blood. It possibly looked a lot worse than it was but it was pretty scary for a while.
I checked his discharge notes & phoned 111, where he was advised to back to A&E.
he’s been there since 8pm, he has a canula in and is waiting to hear what the next steps are.

has anyone been through similar? What happens next & how is it treated?
he did say that the bleeding was slowing down before he went up to the hospital, but not sure how they will look to treat or if he will be kept in or when he will be home.

Any info or experiences much appreciated.
i’m currently on my own, couldnt go with him as both kids in bed & we didnt want to worry them.

19 year old DD had this after her tonsillectomy last year. Even though the bleeding wasn’t particularly severe and it had stopped by the time we got to A&E the consultant there still informed us that she’d be admitted for 24 hours of observation and IV antibiotics - this is standard protocol. Thankfully no more bleeding overnight and she was discharged the next day.

Hope that your DH is feeling better soon. Adult tonsillectomy is such a horrible recovery, never mind the bleeding!

DD had her tonsils out aged 18. She had a small haemorrhage - massive blood clots down the back of her throat and spitting out blood. She was re admitted to hospital and they put her on clotting medication and a drip. She wasn’t allowed to eat for a couple of days in case she needed emergency surgery to try and cauterise the blood vessels. Poor kid lost a stone in a week.

In the end she didn’t need more surgery but was kept in for a fair few days so they could keep an eye on her.
