Constipation…….nothing is working

Lovemusic82 · 11/06/2024 17:28

I had a surgery (hysterectomy) 3 months ago. My bowels were not that great before surgery but I still went most days and could eat several things that would make me go. Since surgery I sometimes go a couple days without a bowel movement, stools are very hard and what ever I try and eat or take to rectify it doesn’t seem to work. I have taken stool softeners (laxido x 4 a day), am eating a very high fibre diet, exercising a lot, drinking a lot and still nothing. Last night i took a laxative, usually one tablet has me glued to the loo the next morning but I haven’t been at all today.

So why is nothing working? Could it be damage from my surgery? I was told my surgery went well with no complications (key hole).

Just eaten a bowl of rhubarb in hope that works, usually it gives me stomach cramps and makes me poop 😬

Definitely give it a ‘helping hand’ through the vaginal wall. This is the only thing that helps me when I suffer occasionally.

Lactulose?

livelovelough24 · 11/06/2024 21:54

Do try to have a glass of warm water in the morning as soon as you get up. This gets me going every time. Good luck OP.

25thCenturyQuaker · 11/06/2024 22:03

Another vote here for Lactulose, it was the only thing which worked for me after surgery. Be careful to stick to the recommended dose, though, and be prepared for appalling flatulence!

KnittingKnewbie · 11/06/2024 22:07

I have been eating frozen cherries (Aldi sweet black cherries I think they're called). And I love them. Unfortunately for me any more than about 4 instantly cause me to need the bathroom. So I recommend those!

Soberfutures · 11/06/2024 22:09

Listen to what @TheVeryHungryTortoise said. If it had been a while you may have become impacted so all the usual stuff may not help. Or it may only provide short term results. U need to fully clear your bowel and then keep a maintenance dose of the laxido/movicol/docusate. I do think the 4 Laxido is a to small dose for compaction as can be up to 8

Sorry you are struggling. Diabetic chocolate - 100% guaranteed!

whyhavetheygotsomany · 11/06/2024 22:17

Have you tried a glycerin suppository ? Pop it up there and hold on as long as you can. You will go within five minutes !!!

caringcarer · 11/06/2024 22:18

Buy the Werther's sugar free butterscotch. They have sorbitol instead of sugar and it goes straight through you. Maybe try eating 5.

Sorry you are struggling. Diabetic chocolate - 100% guaranteed!

This also has sorbital instead of sugar as the sweetener.

katebushh · 11/06/2024 22:22

Over the counter glycerol suppositories, what I resort to when I gets bad.

katebushh · 11/06/2024 22:22

it* gets bad!

Frances0911 · 11/06/2024 22:26

As someone mentioned, Vitamin C in either tablet or soluble form. It runs right through me. Obviously that's not normal, so not sure why it does that.

HobnobsChoice · 11/06/2024 22:27

Any fruit with sorbitol has that effect for me. And my kids. I know when they have been picking fruit in the garden by the fast disappearing loo roll.

Cherries as mentioned, strawberries plums and peaches, raspberries and apples will all do it. You might not want to add any more fibre/bulk, if so then a lot of sugar free sweets have it in,as previous posters have discovered.

The worst for me was when I was pregnant and had terrible heartburn so was swigging gaviscon which then made me constipated as well. The relief of a handful of cherries and a tin of mandarin oranges was immense

I use high doses of vitamin C (4,000mg) and more if needed. They’re good for you and the only side effect is diarrhoea.

I came on here to say the exact same thing except that I use a lower dose. 500mg with breakfast, then another 500mg with my evening meal every day.

It works.

Lactulose. It was the only thing to help after a general last year short term. Not same operation but I was discharged from hospital with it over the likes of Fybogel which was well out back then.

Natural foods are things with chilli down to tomato chilli pasta sauce or pizza with it. Recipes with jalapeño or baked beans etc. Luke warm water to changing position on the toilet seat to taking a walk.

Holland and Barrett have strawberry/blueberry jam on special deals at the mo, taking a closer look these were laced with dates:

I’m away from home at the mo and other way (think it is all the quite strong coffee made lord knows with what milk and some things I’m missing like daily fruit) I got some Imodium and realised I should have asked further advice from the chemist as don’t think I can take it so I opted for a steak tonight as hopefully that can take some time to digest.

Mabelface · 11/06/2024 23:01

Just been through the same thing and 8 sachets a day of movicol for a couple of days got things moving. Stick with the softener, just switch things up a bit.

Nannyamc · 11/06/2024 23:18

Had this problem for quite some time. Had to be sent to hospital with bowel obstruction They cleared it out recommend fybogel sachets each morning on waking. Water is sent to bowel ro soften content.
Usually works in about 15 mins. Orange or citrus flavour. Have had no problems since

TheGirlattheBack · 11/06/2024 23:29

How long have you been taking Windeze for? Constipation can be a side effect of this type of medication.

loropianalover · 11/06/2024 23:32

Boiled water and having flaxseed regularly always helps me, and massaging my stomach in the direction that your digestive system moves (I watched a few YouTube videos and copied).

Feel better OP, it’s horrible!

buffyslayer · 11/06/2024 23:33

Tinned pears in juice help me

DumpedByText · 11/06/2024 23:43

Turmeric tablets turned me inside out. I was taking them for pain/inflammation, made me have the poops so bad I had to stop them.

zeddybrek · 11/06/2024 23:48

Glycerol suppositories and lactulose

sandgrown · 11/06/2024 23:48

Not sure if they are still available but I got something called monastery herbs from a health food shop . They look like dried grass and you sprinkle on cereal and other foods .
