Treating heavy periods

I'm really anaemic (haemoglobin is 80, getting rechecked tomorrow to see if its the same or worsened) and I reckon the cause is most likely heavy periods so going to need to deal with them but I've never been keen on going on the pill because of side effects, or IUDs because insertion sounds so bloody painful plus heard so many horror stories. What other options are there? Can't take NSAIDs so can't use them to reduce bleeding.

Tranexamic acid. Is worth a try. But also finding the root cause of the bleeding.

Natsku · 11/06/2024 11:22

What are the side effects like with that?

The doctor said we will try to find the root cause but it seems to me the most likely culprit is heavy periods.

I second TA. I used to be permanently anemic through peri menopause because of flooding periods. The TA did help me.

They need to investigate the reason for your heavy periods! It could be a fibroid or endometriosis. I take tranaxemic acid with no side effects.

Is it likely to be fibroids or endo if I've always had heavy periods? They haven't changed at all since I was a teenager except temporary changes after childbirth.
Though I suppose something must be different for me to be so anaemic, usually its only mild.

Tranexamic acid, as long as you don't have risk factors for thrombosis.

Mefenamic acid, as long as you don't have a history of gastro-intestinal ulceration or bleeding or inflammatory bowel disease.

Although they have similar names, they work in very different ways.

Less likely to be fibroids if been bleeding heavily since teens. They should look into it though. I would definitely ask about tranaxemic acid though, you just take it for the first 4 days of your period.

Definitely going to ask for tranexemic acid once they've investigated the cause

I'm thinking now maybe periods aren't the main cause. Got new results back and ferritin is at 4 - its never been that low before and my periods haven't changed at all.
