PMDD - total hysterectomy

Posted this on women's health but got no replies so thought I would try here

I had a total hysterectomy on 30th May for PMDD. My consultant also thought my body didn't respond well to progesterone so am only on estrogen patches.

Background, psychiatrist thought I had PMDD (had mental health problems for decades) and referred me to gynae. Gynae agreed and put me on a chemically induced menopause for 18 months (wait time for op)

I didn't see much improvement with the chemical menopause and my consultant thought that was because of the progesterone I had to take to protect my ovaries.

Now I have had my op and am just on the estrogen and I'm still feeling shit. Do I just need to give it time? It's only been just over a week, and I'm obvs still recovering from the op, but I thought my mental health would improve, but it hasn't 😞

My husband is hassling me about trying to find a PMDD specialist to find out if it is normal to feel this way at the beginning.

Does anyone have experience. I'm worried that I have just had major surgery for no reason or benefit! 😫

I've no experience of PMDD and I haven't had a hysterectomy, but any time I've had a general anaesthetic I've felt like utter shite, angry, anxious and weepy for at least a week/10 days after.

I do hope you're feeling better soon though @alwaysscared Flowers

@ChrisPPancake thank you, this makes me feel a bit better!

I haven't had the same symptoms or surgery as yourself, however after each GA I have had I've been wiped out and experienced almost depression like symptoms for about 10 days after. Hope you feel better soon

yeah - I agree with Chris - can taken a good 10-14 days to feel OK after a GA. Give it time. Look after yourself and #let others look after you. Hysterectomy is a big op even when laproscopic

You may still need progesterone, but if you're sensitive to synthetic progestins like the ones in the Mirena, mini pill, depo injection or implant, then micronised progesterone might work better for you. I've been doing some perimenopause research as I've always had severe PMS and also ADHD but now am entering perimenopause and it's awful. My psychiatrist has increased my Concerta dose which has helped immensely, but I now need help with the HRT element and am not having luck finding a doctor who knows about it.

I hope you find some good help. I've been using the Balance menopause app which is quite eye-opening.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I have found someone who deals with PMDD from a previous thread on here so if I'm still feeling this way in a few weeks I might try and get an appointment, private though.
I'm still very tired, I think from the GA.
I think my issue has been progesterone for many, many years which is why they want me only on oestrogen. I'll see how the next few weeks go.
