I got 5.8%. My doctors have classed this as normal but if you Google it it says pre diabetes. Should I be worried?

That result isn’t using the normal values. Anything below 41 is considered ok
Do you mean HBAC 1?

BabaYagasLittleSister · 08/06/2024 19:43

I guess so. I have two results. One is 40 and one is 5.8%.

It seems to go up every year, last year it was 39.

40 is fine but worth watching your diet.

42 and over is prediabetic.

An HbA1C of 40 is just below the pre-diabetics level, which ranges from 42 to 47. So not pre-diabetic yet. But take this as a wake-up call to take steps not to allow it to go higher.

The best way to do this is to lower your carb intake, as carbs turn to sugar in the bloodstream and raise insulin levels. This means such foods as anything flour based (bread, cakes, pastry and pasta) and potatoes which are high in starch. And obviously sugar itself.

If you are overweight, you might find that a low carb diet will help to lose weight too, which is often a cause of T2 diabetes.

Plenty of info here: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/pre-diabetes.html

Prediabetes or borderline diabetes is a metabolic condition and growing global problem that is closely tied to obesity.

5.8 (40 in the new measurement) HbA1c is on the higher side of normal but still very much normal.

Maybe up the exercise, watch your fast carb intake but nothing to unduly worry about.
