nits and hairdryers

My son has had nits for ages now which no amount of chemicals, combing or oils has managed to shift.
However, I only had them once and they disappeared quickly never to return.
Eventually, I wondered that it might be because I blow dry my hair every other day and that they were killed off by the hot dry air.
So, I tried it on my son's hair and bingo! it seems to have worked and we have finally got rid of the nits.
Has anyone else tried blow drying them to death?

I have been going through my first case of nits recently. I got them too, then DS got them again.
We used a nitty gritty comb and tea tree conditioner which seemed to work.
I can't imagine a hairdryer would blast off the eggs though?

I blowdry my dd's hair regularly, and i don't think it had made a difference.
Her hair is quite fine and light, so I just pick all the eggs/nits out. That, sadly seems to work the best.

And i put tea tree on her hair when there is an outbreak.

I don't let her have her hair down very often either

Nitty Gritty combs are the dogs bollocks, you just have to do it every few days.

my ds has nits constantly! But weirdly I havent caught them. I cant work out for the life of me why, but maybe it is the hairdrying! Will give it a go on ds and report back!

I hairspray my lo - thought it might give some resistance !

Smittals · 07/04/2008 12:14

On a similar note, I did wonder if the fact I straighten my hair was the reason why I only had 1 or 2 passengers when DD had a whole herd!

DarthVader · 07/04/2008 12:15

combing with conditioner every 5th day really works, and you can also tell if your child has picked up any new lice since you started treatment

doggiesayswoof · 07/04/2008 12:17

Dd's hair has been blow-dried regularly for the past couple of years and it does not stop the nits. In fact we are currently going through another outbreak

Quick hijack - DWP or anyone else who uses Nitty Gritty - do you know if you can get the comb on prescription please? Or did I dream this?

doggiesayswoof · 07/04/2008 12:20

The thing is though they live so close to the scalp. Maybe the straighteners wouldn't actually reach them.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 07/04/2008 12:33

Apparently you can.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 07/04/2008 12:33

Kerrymum it would kill the live ones, but you probably don't get close enough to the scalp to get them all, or the egss.

tombolaprize · 07/04/2008 15:13

Oh well: it seems like I have just been lucky and managed to eradicate the nits with a combination of actions - and the hairdryer is not necessarily the secret weapon we have all been looking for.
However, my 4 year old son does look splendid with a presidential bouffant hairstyle, and enjoys yelling at the nits "all the nits must flee the country, the whirlwind is coming."
So, I'll carry on.

I know this is a zombie thread but I stumbled across it while researching head lice treatments and research has shown that blow drying the scalp for half an hour kills nearly all eggs though not as successful for lice. I'm going to blow dry my kids alongside combing to get on top of the little buggers.
