anyone know anything about white fillings?

Am so worried, I could not get in touch with my NHS dentist so saw a private dentist who suggested re-doing a old filling that had broken and I was having a problem with. I did not realise until I got home that he has used a white filling. I just assumed it would be amalgam like my others. It was a back tooth and looked like a bright white piece of chewing gum stuck on the tooth, I thought the colour might settle but 24 hours later, it is brown/orange. Its obviously stained from something. I drink tea but only about as much as the average person and the dentist never mentioned avoiding certain things. Brushing is not doing much for the colour.

I am so upset, it looks so ugly even though its at the back, and I am worried it is not safe? can white fillings leak toxic chemicals in the mouth?

I think I am going to have to ring them back next week. I am such a nervous patient too. I really do not want it re-doing.

Please help settle my worries
Ty

Sounds like a temporary filling. They are bright white.

Actual white fillings shouldn't discolour much. They put them on front teeth so they need to stay the correct shade of white they were mixed to be to match the tooth.

Phone the dentist and ask if it's a temp filling you had.

freakyoldhermit · 08/06/2024 13:14

its not a temp one, I am not due to go back

When I had a white filling recently, I could only drink cold water for the rest of the day. Hot drinks were forbidden, so perhaps there is more of a risk of staining in the first 24 hours?

freakyoldhermit · 08/06/2024 13:58

I was just told to eat and drink normally🙁

I think you need to go back and show them?

Phone them and see what they say about it instantly becoming discoloured.

I know they say coffee red wine and smoking causes discolouration but surely that reference is 'over time' not the same day!

I drink coffee and my white filled teeth have never stained as bad as yours.

I didn't eat or drink hot drinks the first day but I did the following morning with coffee at breakfast time.

Mine are not as white as once they were but they pretty much still match my teeth.

I wonder if the stuff wasn't mixed properly or overhardened under the light thing or whatever. We'd need a dental expert to advise.

Any dentists or dental nurses online today that can advise??

This happened to me. I had an existing white filling in a front tooth which, over the course of many years, had discoloured a little. I agreed to have it replaced with a new white filling.

When my dentist showed me immediately it was done, I was so pleased, it looked so much better. However, by the next day it looked worse than the old filling! It had discoloured to the extent that whilst out for lunch for one day, my sister told me there was something stuck in my teeth! No, it was just my new filling 😣

I intended to go back to the dentist but life got in the way and I just didn't follow it up. I still have that damn filling. I'm reluctant to get it replaced again in case the exact same thing happens, as I have no idea why it happened in the first place.

I do drink tea and coffee and wasn't told to refrain from drinking after having the filling.

thanks everyone, I am going to email in for advice and see what they say

I am annoyed at myself for not asking about the filling but just presumed it would be amalgam as that is best for back teeth and I have had amalgam fillings that are still going strong for 40 years.

Ideally I would like it replacing with amalgam or the tooth extracting, it would at least look better

I am also worried about the material leaking toxins, I have read about this on the internet, does anyone know anything about this?

A white composite filling should not stain significantly, especially within days. That doesn't sound right. Bear in mind an amalgam.looks silver and dark so also fairly unsightly. But if it's white it shouldn't change colour to brown!
Definitely go back and ask them what's happened and what they used.

freakyoldhermit · 10/06/2024 14:51

so I emailed with my concern, I just got an email back saying I had a glass isomoner temporary filling, no mention of the discolouration or anything

WTF?

why would they use temp filling on a permanent back tooth? I need to know how long this will last but they are not replying to me now🙄 feel royally conned, and I am so upset

this was supposed to be sorted for me to go on holiday, now I am left with an orange temp filling

does anyone know how long this will likely last before it falls out, I daren't eat properly on it, (great holiday eh) as least for a few weeks and then I will try and get back in with NHS dentist to see if he will change it properly to amalgam.

Surely if its a temporary filling they have every intention of giving you a permanent filling? Are you sure you havent misunderstood what they have said?

I’d think twice before casually thinking of removing a tooth! I had no choice but to have two removed and I’d give anything to have them back.

A lot of practices routinely use white composite fillings now, amalgams are old fashioned and although they last years, they have Mercury in them, so a lot of people don't want them in their months. Don't worry about the temporary filling being unsafe, it isn't. Did they not tell you it was temporary? They probably did a temporary because you said you already had a dentist? How much did you pay?

freakyoldhermit · 11/06/2024 08:48

I did not misunderstand at all, this is a permanent filling on a back tooth

No mention of going back at all

It was around £150

OP posts:
FiveTreeHill · 11/06/2024 09:58

£150 for a private molar filling sounds incredibly cheap. Was it an emergency?

Glass ionomer can be used as a permenant filling material in teeth in certain situations. It is safe as is composite.

I wouldnt say Amalgam was the gold standard for posterior teeth. It's old fashioned and is being fazed out due to containing mercury
