Arms falling asleep at night

I’ve been having muscular pain and stiffness for months. Now I’m finding my arms are falling asleep at night. I wake up and they’re tingling and burning. Needless to say this has scared the shit out of me, thinking that whatever’s causing the stiffness is getting worse.

GP is just shrugging and saying there’s nothing wrong because all my blood tests are spot on. I don’t meet the criteria for any referrals. I’m 44 and having some mild peri symptoms.

Any ideas?

This happens me, but only the arm I sleep on, so I ignore it. Is it both arms at once?

Miriad · 07/06/2024 04:10

Yes, but the right arm more so, which is also the stiffest. I woke up lying on my back with my hands resting on my tummy, and both hands were asleep up to the elbows. After I moved a bit it feels like the burning you get after pins and needles. I have health anxiety and I’m thinking all sorts of worrying thoughts.

Is it just your arms or does it extend to your hands? Could it be carpal tunnel syndrome?

Magnesium

ive had this before. Are your elbows touching the bed? I came to the conclusion that it was from lying on my back and it was a nerve thing from my arms being folded and in contact from the bed or lack of circulation. It goes when I squeeze my hand into a fist.

it happens less as I tend not to sleep on my back at the moment.

Spinal stenosis?

Mamma364747 · 07/06/2024 04:34

I took a magnesium supplement a few months ago. Tried it for 30 days but
it didn’t resolve the muscle stiffness and twitching, so I didn’t buy more when it ran out.

I have this and it turned out to be carpal tunnel x

Trapped ulnar nerve

CrunchyCarrot · 07/06/2024 07:59

Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause tingling and numbness in extremities so you might want to look into that.

Me too. A wrist brace that stops my hand curling up at night has helped.

Olivia37 · 03/02/2025 12:40

Did you get do the bottom of it? Having it now and wonder what could cause it.

QuaintPanda · 03/02/2025 12:52

Look up nerve glides/ nerve flossing for upper body. Sometimes the nerves from the neck get a bit stuck somewhere and tingle/ go numb. It could be due to sleep position or general bad posture and tends to be worse if body is tense and even when it’s cold. It’s pretty common.

a nerve glides/floss helps the nerves move more smoothly. Glide them gently. Less is more as you’re gently persuading them to get moving again.

magnesium and vitamin D also help, as does B12. FWIW, stress depletes magnesium quickly.

From what you’re saying, the nerve issues are localised. Give it a try and relax your body as much as you can.

Was this not just due to them being that way up? Sounds perfectly normal!
