Blood types

Hi

I’m not sure why I have been thinking about this tonight, as DC are now 7 and 12! But, I wonder if anyone could answer this blood type question, as googling isn’t getting a lot of clarity.

During my pregnancy I needed anti D injections, due to being blood type B rhesus negative (the second rarest in the UK). Post-birth I remember vaguely a conversation about DC’s blood type with a maternity nurse and I can’t remember having another injection of anti D. I believe this must mean that DC are also rhesus negative? Can anyone confirm this? I can’t see anything written on my maternity notes or in their red book, which I’m surprised at.

My kids (19, 15) asked me their blood type recently and I shocked them by saying I have no idea, I donate blood so that's the only reason I know mine. I think it can be identified almost instantly in a medical setting and that's really when you need to know.

Yes, it’s only in medical settings it’s important. I’m just curious why it wasn’t written down on any records seeing as they did actually test them.

And just confirming that if I didn’t need another anti d dose after birth, then that means they are also negative?

Isn’t it more of a risk to baby than to mum?

Not really. It’s only a potential risk to any future pregnancies involving a rhesus positive baby.

OP, I’m rhesus negative and I had Anti-D shots after both of my children were born. I assumed this is because they are Rh+

If you didn’t, they are presumably Rh-. Isn’t it annoying that we don’t know though? I was so curious to know what their blood groups were.

@Jellycats4life

Yes, it’s exactly that! They were tested. I didn’t have another dose. So I think that just mean they are negative too. But as they were tested wouldn’t it make sense all round to make a note on the records? They may have said to me but I was so exhausted and drugged up i can’t remember!
