Tips for getting rid of lice - from yourself!

Irie1980 · 05/06/2024 22:48

Does anyone have any tips for getting rid of lice from yourself? I suspect I have caught it from my son - have been treating and combing weekly, but 3 weeks later, my scalp still itches.

Getting someone else to do it is just not going to happen - so would appreciate any tips you have for eradicating the f&ckers.

Thanks

Weekly isn’t enough. A nit comb along with an ungodly amount of conditioner + time on a nightly basis until you are certain that all lice and eggs are gone. It’s painstaking but ultimately the only thing that really works

You need to be dedicated and thorough every night OP… sorry 😭 I think you can get stronger prescription treatments if they really won’t go, but there’s no point doing that if the rest of the house isn’t in order.

Have you done a deep deep vacuum of your bedroom, bed, couch’s, living room? Have you boiled the actual pillows and duvets and cushions, not just the covers. Boil wash teddys, throws and blankets, mattress protectors, towels… Throw out all of your hairbrushes & hair ties.

Hair straighteners 🙂

Vinegar and either olive oil or coconut oil. The oils kills adults lice and the vinegar dissolves the stuff that secures the eggs on hair.

Mix them in a jar, and slather on the hair and scalp. Wrap a towel over the hair for 30 minutes. Then comb through with a nit comb. Repeat after 7 days. Keep repeating until the eggs are cleared.

I used this with my DDs and it’s very effective. Learned it in Latin America where people can’t afford the shampoos, also the chemicals used are much stronger than here.

Hedrin Once

Apply and follow instructions. Comb through. This will get 90%.
Then repeat after 1 week.

All gone.

The only thing that's worked for me and 2DDs. All of us have long hair and I can't be washing/combing every night Confused

I have waist length hair and done it myself. Started off with headrin stuff and combed through. Section ur hair too so u aren't missing any parts. Next day I got the treatment that killed the eggs and done the treatment again. Just wet hair and used conditioner and combed through every day after that. I never found anymore after the first 2days.

Also done the treatment one week later again.

I bought the nitty gritty comb and hated it, it was really difficult to pull through the hair. The cheap plastic combs are the best imo.

We were all not free within 2 days. I was still finding eggs in the hair weeks and months later. That's why it's important to get the stuff that kills the eggs or u will be riddled!

Hair straighteners 🙂

Hair straighteners just cements the empty eggs to the hair shafts. The lice and live eggs are too close to the scalp to be accessed by the straighteners without burning your scalp! Stop believing everything you see on tik tok

EnglishBluebell · 06/06/2024 15:00

@Lucy Long Socks Also the popping sound you hear, is not any lice being killed it's the empty eggs being burnt

MikeRafone · 06/06/2024 15:03

olive oil all over your hair and scalp - allow to sit for 4/5 hours - then comb through

3 weeks is incubation time for eggs - so it could be that you have eradicated the lice but the eggs have hatched.

So after the olive oil - which send them to sleep so easier to comb out - wash and dry hair and then use straightening irons and straighten your hair.

Repeat this every 3/4 days for the first 2 weeks and then at 21 days do every other day

I've never been on tic tok. Maybe you should stop assuming. I have 3 girls with very long hair. I've always used this method along with nit comb and conditioner. I tried the shop stuff and never got on with it. I also washed bedding, cuddlies, coats and hats etc. Never once burnt the children either.

Ignore this, lice die when away from scalp they do not live on bedding etc:,

Thanks everyone. I won't be hoovering like a loon, thanks anyway, read that lice don't live away from heads so that's one thing I don't have to worry about at least!

My plan is to use Hedrin Once again in 7 days (did a treatment with a different product last night, plus a thorough comb). I'll comb with conditioner every second night in the shower until then and all next week too.

The idea of mayonnaise or similar in my hair makes me feel ill, I'd rather risk the chemicals, the nastier the better 😅

@Lucy Long Socks It's the nit comb & conditioner that's worked. Not the straighteners!

Miriad · 07/06/2024 05:13

I would do a Britney! Bzzt - no more lice.

MumChp · 07/06/2024 05:21

Nit combs and conditioner.
And liceshampoo for 4 weeks.

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 07/06/2024 06:33

lice CAN live up to TWO days on bedding, it takes up to 30 seconds for a louse to attach itself.
Yes, bedding clothing hair brushes towels need attention.

Of course they live! For up to 48hrs IIRC, so if OP is torturing herself combing her head and then lying on the same pillowcase and sheets she lay on the night before she’ll get nowhere.
