The rash is raised and blanching. He has temp of 38.5. He's vomited 3 times since about half 7 this evening. He's listless and floppy, but could just be tired and sleepy. I suspect it's teething and i suspect this is what the dr's at a&e will tell me if i bundle him in the car and take him - but should i take him just to be sure?

NHs direct always say go to A&E - just to cover their arses!

fingerwoman · 06/04/2008 22:18

does calpol/nurofen help with the temp?

I have to say I would take him, just ot be on the safe side.
it's better to take him and be sure, than not to take him and things get worse

SlightlyMadSweet · 06/04/2008 22:19

"He's listless and floppy" should be taken seriously.....If I felt my child was listless and floppy I would be on route to A&E by now.

Lazylou · 06/04/2008 22:19

Definately take him, if for no other reason than to put your mind at rest. I am totally extra when it comes to rashes, particularly when mixed with temperatures and tend to rush DD to a&e. Just by posting this, it would seem that you are unsure about his condition, even though you are suggesting it could be teething associated. If I were you, I would take your DS and get a professional opinion. HTH and hope he is feeling better soon!

theUrbanNixie · 06/04/2008 22:23

but SMS - he's asleep! he's going to be kind of floppy when he's asleep isn't he??

can't get calpol/medised into him, he sprays it back at me!

OP posts:
fingerwoman · 06/04/2008 22:25

yes, it's pretty hard to tell listless and floppy when they're asleep lol

if calpol etc will bring the temp down then perhaps wait until morning.
but if he is still hot then, take him

SlightlyMadSweet · 06/04/2008 22:26

Well yes....I had assumed he was actually floppy when awake.....I don't think you would use floppy to describe the sympoms of a sleeping baby as you are right they will be floppy by definition IYSWIM.

Sorry my misinterpretaion.

theUrbanNixie · 06/04/2008 22:27

he was listless and floppying before he went to sleep as well, but it could be because he was tired.

OP posts:
SlightlyMadSweet · 06/04/2008 22:28

Only you can make the judgement if that was "normal" for him...

theUrbanNixie · 06/04/2008 22:32

see, he's usually v v v v v lively. but he hadn't had a nap today so everything could stem from that. or teething.

oh ffs i'd better take him. bang goes my chances of sleeping tonight - four hours till we're seen by a paed then transferred to a ward which is hot as hell and full of other ill people.

maybe i should just take him to the out of hours dr? tis much nearer and they can refer us if they think it necessary...

OP posts:
Niecie · 06/04/2008 22:32

I would take him too. I have to say, I haven't heard of such symptons being a result of teething unless you know from experience this is how it affects him.

It probably isn't meningitis (although the vaccinations don't cover all types) but there are other things that cause rashes that need sorting and antibiotics.

I hope your DS gets better soon.

wiggleit · 06/04/2008 22:33

Ring NHS direct... agree with fingerwoman, if his temp goes down after calpol then it's prob just teething or a bug, but if not then get him to a&e. hope he's ok xx

Pavlovthecat · 06/04/2008 22:33

Urban - did not know he had these symptoms in my post on other thread. Sorry

NHS direct - rash, temp and sickness, whether or not you think he is listles, is enough for him to see a Dr urgently to rule out meningitis.

As mentioned, for your peace of mind if nothing else.

avenanap · 06/04/2008 22:35

Honey, get off the internet and take him to A&E. There are a few different types of meningitis, he would not have been given jabs for all of them. He may be just dehydrated and in need of fluids. It's far better to get him checked out and find that there's nothing wrong then to leave him and hope for the best. I hope he's feeling better soon.

theUrbanNixie · 06/04/2008 22:37

tis ok Pavlov - you are not psychic...are you?

he has had these symptoms and been fine before, whether it was teething or something else, who knows? i know other babies who vomit etc with teething, but that doesn't mean that's what it is ITSWIM

OP posts:
wrinklytum · 06/04/2008 22:37

I would go with your gut instinct.

Out of hours seems like a good plan.

Its the listless and floppy bit I don't like..

Probably will be a bug but better safe than sorry.

Are you a HCP? "blanching" sounds quite medicalised. No one will think you are daft. Its your own child and you are worried.

Hope little one is OK xx

theUrbanNixie · 06/04/2008 22:39

he's def not dehydratedd avenanap - he had a d&v bug recently and i was told what signs to look for. he's not showing any of them.

dh thinks it may be a new vest which has caused the rash the rash is blanching btw, i just panicked when i saw it (as you do)

OP posts:
theUrbanNixie · 06/04/2008 22:41

i'm not an HCP , no. well, i am kinda, but not in the way you're thinking. no, i nicked the term from the last time we had a meningitis scare and i thought it was a good shorthand way of making sure everyone knew what i meant!!

OP posts:
theUrbanNixie · 06/04/2008 22:44

out of hours dr is going to call me back...

Pavlovthecat · 06/04/2008 22:51
