DH hypertension

DH is 50 and recently been put on medication for hypertension. His blood pressure isn’t sky high but it’s high and he has family history of heart disease and high blood pressure. He says people his age don’t get put on medication. for high blood pressure. Does anyone 50 or under take medication for hypertension or know anyone who does?

Clearly they do as he has been out on meds. Why is he reluctant to take them?

yumyumyumy · 05/06/2024 18:55

Of course they do! I've had high bp since 35. I'm 39 and I'm on medication. Not lifestyle related, strong family history. Better to be on medication than have a stroke or heart attack.

yumyumyumy · 05/06/2024 18:56

50 isn't that young for high blood pressure anyway. They usually think it's abnormal in under 40s, when I've had checks.

👋 I've been on it since late 40s.

Where is he getting his info from?

Here's the NHS guidance, no mention of his assertion.

Of course they do!

Why is he saying that, so he can get out of taking his meds? That would be very stupid as he clearly has a need for them

What's the back story?

AnnaMagnani · 05/06/2024 19:14

Unfortunately for your DH, yes they do.

If diet and exercise hasn't shifted his BP then the next step is meds.

Arguably it's even more important to aggressively control his BP at his age as he has potentially another 50 years in which he needs to avoid strokes, heart attacks, kidney disease and dementia. You might be more relaxed about the BP of someone age 80+

Runs in my maternal line and my mum had a sudden stroke at 69. I’ve just started meds (Ramopril) for HBP, I’m 53. Although I seem to have the Ramopril cough - so I will ask for something different next time !

Yes they do.
i know brothers aged about sixty now

one has been taking medication since he was 45, and has totally normal BP. Lives a normal life and goes hill walking and is very active

the other brother thought it was all daft and he was too young, and nearly died of a heart attack about five years ago, and can’t walk past the end of his road and is very limited in what he can do. And travel insurance is extortionate.

ask him which he wants to be

My husband is now 53, been on BP meds for around 5yrs now.
