Does my tooth extraction look to be healing ok? Grim picture included

Had lower right molar yanked out in a tug of war battle 4 days ago. Up until today there was a very obvious grey jelly goo level with the rest of the gum. Woke this morning and either the top layer has fallen out, or sunken further in. Just looks more hollow than it has the last few days. Is that normal at this stage or am I on my way to a dry socket? No pain (well, except a mild throbbing which has steadily improved since the extraction).

Also, when is my mouth going to stop tasting like a bag of sour arseholes? I don't think it's infected, there's no swelling or pus/leakage or anything, it just tastes awful! Regularly salt water rinsing.

Hoping someone more experienced in tooth extractions can tell me it's fine and that my own breath won't make me gag for much longer Grin

All looks fine, extraction socket granulating well in your photo. Taste and low level pain will improve /decrease over the upcoming week.

ImOddsAndEnds · 03/06/2024 20:16

@bfsham Brilliant, thanks so much! Am I right in thinking if I make it to around day 6 without any major pain then I've likely avoided dry socket? That's my main worry really. I want to be able to properly swish mouthwash around my mouth without fear!

Yes most likely if it's going to happen (dry socket) it would have happened by that point (within a week).

Hi, do you mind me asking why you had it extracted? I've just had 1 root canal done and now found out I need second. 😩 Am contemplating extraction as I'm struggling to meet the costs of a second root canal.....

ImOddsAndEnds · 03/06/2024 23:04

@RavenT Honestly the main reason was the cost! I was offered a root canal that had a high chance of failing and requiring repeat/extraction anyway for £900, or just an extraction for £90. I'd have gone for the root canal if it was a more noticeable tooth, but you can't really see it at all when I smile so I went cheap and easy.

I'm suffering here with a failed root canal, which lasted a year. I should have had it extracted and saved myself €1200. It is now causing me all sorts of trouble, and I will be getting it removed this week. Hopefully I will avoid dry socket before going on holiday in 5 days 😕
Better to extract a crappy tooth if you have other teeth in the area. My problem is I have very bad teeth, and have gaps, and now will have an even bigger gap! So deciding between implants or false teeth (shock, horror!!).

Thank you @ImOddsAndEnds . It's hard isn't it, root canals are so expensive and no guarantee of success 😬

Hi,
sorry I no I’m late to the convo but when you say the taste in your mouth was awful how long did it last?? I’m day 9 tomorrow and on and off I can still taste like rusty metal its blood but don’t have a clue we’re from lol because the tooth looks like it’s healing well and I don’t have any pain now :( is this the taste you had ? I don’t know if it’s normal are infected but I don’t have any pain 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🙏🏻🙏🏻 xxx

Justaquestion90 · 17/04/2025 00:41

At day 9 after a tooth extraction, it was previously a root canal with permanent cap, but a few weeks ago the cap and most of the tooth just fell out when I was flossing. I had an extraction on 4/7, they had to cut into my gums slightly to get leverage on the tooth and it was an extreme amount of pressure and game of tug of war. Finely came out but it seems to be taking longer than any other I’ve had to heal. Does it look like it’s healing well? I did just eat so the site is a little pinker than it has been. I’m not eating on that side, but food still goes where it wants to.

no pain or swelling as of right now
