80% of headlice are immune to chemical treatments - so why do people still use them? Or has everyone swapped to Hedrin?

I am a bug busting fan myself, but lots of parents at my school prefer to use chemicals as they say they find it easier.
But given that 80% of lice are immune to the toxic chemicals, has everyone now ditched the toxic chemicals in favour of Hedrin I wonder, and does Hedrin work well?

All my frineds use Hedrin and say its the best thing ever, I still comb with a nitty gritty and conditioner though .

DarthVader · 06/04/2008 16:46

this article claims that the Dept of Health rate Hedrin as 70% effective which is far better than for Lyclear, Prioderm, Malathion etc.

I claim 100% for bug busting method though from personal experience, plus you can be confident of not passing them on once treatment has started, and you can identify if you have caught new lice or not once the treatment has started.

Nitty Gritty and conditioner all the way here too.

TurkeyLurkey · 06/04/2008 16:51

Blimey only a 57% success with bug buster!

I know my friends don't even bother combing now, they just go straight for the Hedrin. I'm going to keep doing the combing though as it works for me .

DarthVader · 06/04/2008 16:55

I think if you follow the bug busting programme properly - comb on every 5th day for 4 sessions, and start again as session 1 if you find new lice - it is bound to work - I suspect failures are due to not following the rules properly!

Yes I think you're right DarthVader, I don't believe anyone can be as anal as me about de-nitting!

emma1977 · 06/04/2008 17:12

Combing with conditioner is the best method for nit removal, but needs to be done almost religiously for it to work properly.

SugarSkyHigh · 06/04/2008 17:28

3 girls with long(ish) hair -
sorry, combing takes me a whole day!

Tinker · 06/04/2008 17:30

Hedrin's useless as well. Everything's useless. [weary nit-comber emoticon]

CarGirl · 06/04/2008 17:30

When mine have been infested I use chemicals to get the numbers down then conditioner and nitty gritty until they are eliminated. 4 dds with long hair believe me it takes months!

SueW · 06/04/2008 17:32

We've only had them once here and used Full Marks solution which is pesticide free. It contains chemicals which make the hair slippy, much like using conditioner I suppose.

One session cleared DD. IIRC it says it takes about 10 minutes. That doesn't count the combing time of course which took so long that for the only time in my life I wished I had a child with a crew cut!

iloatheironing · 06/04/2008 18:18

I have 3 dcs and have only ever used combing and conditioner method. My youngest and only dd has had them more than the other 2. I suppose thats just girls and their long hair. Yes it does take ages. I sit my dd in the bath so no dripping conditioner and nits everywhere!!! Just keep adding extra hot water to keep her warm but she does come out a bit wrinkly !!!I once sat behind a child at a school concert. He had very fine blond hair and I could actually see the lice in his hair...loads of them. Made me itch!!! luckily he wasn't in dds class.

Tinker · 06/04/2008 19:23

Lyclear is also useless. I find.

moondog · 06/04/2008 19:24

I('ve just given my dd a good going over with conditioner and Nitty Gritty.
There is a defininte grim pleasure in it i find.

Tinker · 06/04/2008 19:31

Coconut oil sounds the most promising from that link, must try that.

Tinker · 06/04/2008 19:31

Not after the 100th time md...

CarGirl · 06/04/2008 19:35

I found putting conditioner on dry hair the best and easiest - towel around them, stick TV on nitty gritty and then a bath to wash it all off. much less hassle. There is no way I could comb them whist actually sat in the bath!

sweetcat · 06/04/2008 19:37

Tinker, I sympathise. i have just done mine for the millionth time and I am so sick of it. However, I have started using baby oil instead of hedrin, and combing, and it works. Much cheaper too, but needs a bit of washing out. I think I need to comb more often to get rid of the eggs but we both have very long hair.
