Is my dr right? This can’t be?!

I have a fungal infection in one of my ears, the ear drum is also perforated the ENT consultant has said it’s about half the ear drum. I had it checked yesterday - infection still there, after two rounds of microsuction and some tablets- can’t remember the name. I did have it in my other ear however as that wasn’t perforated I used canestan solution and microsuction and that did the trick. My ENT consultant has now told me to use the canestan solution in the perforated ear drum- I squeezed it in this morning and omg the pain! Can feel it slightly burning my throat but mainly it feels like the side of my face is in stinging pain- it’s ten minutes since I’ve done it- I can still feel it. My question is- are you really supposed to use canestan solution with a perforated ear drum and if yes - Is this pain normal when administering? I really can’t deal with this pain twice a day.

I wouldn’t think so. Please ask a pharmacist.

It seems odd to me, the pain was awful, yep thankyou I will ask a pharmacist, rather annoyed if the ENT dr has told me the wrong info!

I'd check back with ENT. I had an infection and microsuction earlier in the year, and had antibiotic drops - but I was also given a number to call them back with any pain, problems, or if it still hadn't cleared after 10 days.

(It did clear, and I can hear!)

Good luck.

Your better bet is to go back to the ENT consultant than a pharmacist (perhaps phone their secretary) and ask what they think. Hypersensitivity and pain are in the list of SEs for use in the ear, but the consultant is the one who's seen your ear and will be able to advise sensibly.

Thanks guys. I just rang the ENT outpatients, they’ve booked me in to put in some ointment cream in my ear instead. They said canestan can be used with a perforated ear drum but it can be painful for some- no shit!
