Quinsy

Hi - just wondering if anyone has had quinsy and what it was like?

I’ve had tonsillitis quite a few times in recent years and yesterday started with a sore throat that got progressively worse into the evening and continued to worsen today.
Last night I was so cold and shivering that I had to sit under a blanket but then in the night, sweating. My whole body was aching and just general feeling poorly.

Today it’s got worse - my skin was so painful to have the shower water on, it’s painful to take a deep breath (and feels like I’m out of breath), my upper back is really painful, it’s so painful to swallow or talk, seems more so on one side and if I do the pain is in my ears too (like there’s so much burning pressure), one side is very swollen and red and the other has white spots and it hurts up to the base of the back of my head if I move my neck. My voice has changed and I’m sure I’d been drooling in the night.

I tried to get a Dr’s appointment today but they refused to see me and signposted me to this new pharmacy first scheme who then refused to examine me and off their triage tick sheet, told me I’d have to go back to the GP as I wasn’t suitable for them.

I would be at urgent care or walk in centre if you can

yeah please go out of hours or urgent care centre,
i've had quinsy twice before and it's exactly as you've mentioned and it won't get better without antibiotics and steroids
hope you feel better soon x

My DS has had quinsy twice now - the second time he was taken into hospital, after arriving at A&E with massive dehydration and a really dicky heartrate. (Aged mid-20s)

It's a horrible condition and needs urgent and immediate treatment.

Notverywellatm · 30/05/2024 22:59

Another symptom of quinsy is not being able to open your mouth properly. Really bad if GP is messing you about with quinsy.

Trinity69 · 30/05/2024 23:01

I’d get seen by any means necessary. I had Quincy when I was young and it was the cause of the decision to remove my tonsils. Can be very nasty.

NachoHat · 30/05/2024 23:03

A&E OP. I'm not joking. I ignored quinsy at your stage thinking it was bad tonsillitis and it worsened very quickly and I got sepsis. I don't want to frighten you but this is a genuine 'please go to A&E' situation. I really hope you feel better soon quinsy is horrendous.

The GP advice is terrible.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/05/2024 23:03

Get seen ASAP, don't delay. Urgent care or ring 111.

Dustyroad1 · 30/05/2024 23:03

Thank you all - I’ve tried to drink today but barely anything compared to my usual as I can’t get the volume in. I can sort of open my mouth but it’s painful to.
Wouldn’t be the first time the NHS has tried to get rid of me - I had a PE last year and just got told to go to the pharmacy then too (I say this with some jest, it’s the only way I’ve found to come to terms with it!)

You need to be seen ASAP if you can't drink or open your mouth.

deathlyhallows21 · 30/05/2024 23:06

also just to add, i could have written this about myself rn🥲 i experienced all the flu like symptoms aswell with it especially my skin being so sensitive and causing my whole body to ache, my necks stiff as anything and i feel like my ears are under water when i swallow. i haven't got quinsy but i've got my third round of tonsillitis in 3 weeks😅 cocodamol is some relief but need the stronger cocodamol which can only be prescribed from out of hours or doctors which is another reason i suggest going as even if it's tonsillitis it's painful and you need relief and to make sure you're not dehydrated

HauntedCosmos · 30/05/2024 23:08

Your airways can close over with quinsy. Please get to A&E, you may need the swelling drained. It's not a condition to take lightly at all.

LemonySnickets · 30/05/2024 23:14

My ExH had it years ago, it nearly killed him. Ended up admitted to hospital on a drip for 3 days. His throat swelled up to the point he was choking, he was shivering and whoozy with the infection and in a lot of pain.

They had to wait for the infection to clear before they could operate though. He'd suffered with his tonsils for 20+ years and the doctors wouldn't do anything. After 2 bouts of quinsy they took them out.
