Optic atrophy/neuropathy

After a routine eye test, I was told I had optic neuropathy. Was referred to opthalmology who sent me for more tests (currently awaiting results). Possible causes that were mentioned included: toxins, ischemic or MS, however MS/tumours were ruled out after an MRI. Does anyone else have a diagnosis and if so, what was the cause?

@OliviaWillow thank you for the reply. Do you mind me asking hiw old your DD is? And how is her vision? Also, what was the cause of hers? Sorry for all the questions but I've not spoken to many people with experience of it

Sorry, just seen you said it's hereditary. Does anyone else in the family have it?

Yes her grandad and her dad have it, she is 5, i would not have noticed but she started falling behind in school and failed an eyetest, she now has vision support in school and an ipad that mirrors the board, apparently she cant focus past the length of her arm, glasses do not help, she has never mentioned anything else to me so I suspect she has always had this vision so it is no different, she has had dna testing done so we can see if my other daughter carries to same gene and may be affected

Optic neuropathy is a general term for when the optic nerve isn’t working correctly. For example Glaucoma (where the pressure inside the eye is too high) is also an ‘optic neuropathy’. It can be caused by a lot of things, MS, genetic, tumours, poor nutrition, excess alcohol/drugs, idiopathic (no cause found) etc etc
