If a patient has a cracked back molar, 3 back from the incisor. Would this be covered by NHS for root treatment and crown or would this need to be payed privately? Would the NHS only pay for an extraction as the tooth is at the back of the mouth albeit slightly seen when smiling.

thank you

I've had a root canal on a back tooth on the nhs
Ended up needing an implant (not nhs!) but I could have tried a crown on nhs (would have been the 3rd tier)

@Chocolateteabag
would this have been the silver crown on the NHS?
I've been quoted £350 for the root treatment and then £450 for white crown
Wonder if you can have root treatment NHS and crown private or both would need to be same category. I wasn’t offered a combo of both. Thank you

Three back from an incisor is a premolar. Have you had teeth out for orthodontics?
As a general rule metal crowns are often provided on the molars as they are at the back of the mouth. If someone prefers a more aesthetic tooth coloured option this would be offered privately. However nothing you have been quoted there are NHS prices.
You can have a private crown on top of and NHS root canal treatment and vice versa.

Scotland or England?

Fingerscrossed11 · 29/08/2024 23:43

@Tigertigertigertiger
its Scotland. I’ve paid £350 for root canal and been told it might not work in which case I need to have an implant. After paying £350 I sort of thought I would get some sort of guarantee it would work. I don’t have an infinite sum of cash to spend on dental work albeit I do want to keep my tooth as I was told my wisdom tooth is growing in sideways and affecting tooth at back of mouth. Thank you for replying

@MillyMollyMardy thank you for your reply.

I was told as it was a back tooth and needed exploratory work to see if it could be saved I would be £120 for initial app to see if it could be saved, £350 for root treatment and £450 for crown. Honestly just seems ridiculous and now after paying investigative charge and £350 for root treatment I’m told it might not work and I might need an implant. I really don’t have infinite sums of cash in any means as a single mum but do want to keep my teeth. Don’t know what to do

@Fingerscrossed11 you won't ever get a dentist giving a 100% guarantee of success Even our local specialists won't give 100%- there are so many things that can cause it to fail. Your tooth is cracked hence the warning. Even implants don't come with a guarantee of success the human body doesn't work like that and the mouth is a mechanical nightmare; with high loads from chewing on small, strong but brittle teeth and teeming with bacteria that cause harm to our teeth and gums and we regularly feed these bacteria with sugars.

If you haven't yet had the crown that does need to be your next step, if it's still being recommended. Root canal treatment is usually on heavily filled or cracked teeth and without a crown 60% will crack.

An implant will cost you more than the root canal treatment and crown and I would always recommend saving a tooth if it can be rather than extracting and implanting.
