I think the short answer is no. Mainly because they are more expensive and don’t last as long x

I had a white porcelain crown on the NHS in 2010. Sadly, it finally gave up the ghost a few weeks ago and I had to have the tooth removed, but it worked well and looked good for fourteen years

CJ0374 · 30/05/2024 18:35

Short answer is- I don't know, but started another thread recently about my 10yr old ceramic crown crumbling away.

My NHS dentist said another ceramic one would be £660- but wouldn't recommend it because they don't last as long, as shown by my old one!
There was another option for £750 and a zirconia (think that was the name) was £880. There was no mention of an NHS priced crown and at the time, I was just getting the prices to know ahead of time IF I wanted to replace the metal in my current one. I 'assume' those prices are to get it privately at my NHS dentist.
Edited to say that all the above are tooth coloured on the outside.

Sorry I can't help, but a hopeful bump anyway.

No you will not get a white crown on a molar tooth on the NHS, it will be metal because less tooth is removed and it's functional.
You will have to pay privately for a white crown on a molar, you cannot just pay the difference between the two.

Jeannie88 · 30/05/2024 18:44

Any dental treatment still has to be paid for on NHS so surely your choice what you want to pay for? Xx

Lollygaggle · 30/05/2024 18:48

White crowns on molar teeth were removed from NHS fee scale in early 2000s.
The laboratory fee for a white crown is much more than a metal crown and more tooth is removed.
The NHS only allows a set fee which is only a couple of pounds more than the patient is paid. In many cases it does not even cover the cost of treatment and the dentist makes a loss on treatment (root fillings , chrome dentures , denture repairs ,multiple fillings ,crowns and extractions etc etc etc )

thanks all for your responses. @Lollygaggle can I have a crown on a heavily filled tooth? And will my dentist give me the option of NHS metal crown and private white crown? If so, how much are they normally

Nat6999 · 30/05/2024 19:54

Yes you can, I've had all four of mine done

GentleSloth · 30/05/2024 19:54

@CJ0374 this is really helpful thank you, as I’m looking to compare the price of an nhs crown (metal one) with a private one (white)

@Nat6999 when was this if you don’t mind me asking?

Teeth that are heavily filled are the most usual candidates for crowning .

You should be offered NHS and private options but ask if not. Normal range for white crown on back tooth depends on type of material used, where you are in the country and how high end the practice is . £600 upwards is average ISH.

I've had them done in the last 5 years

GentleSloth · 30/05/2024 21:39

Thank you @Lollygaggle very helpful. I am only young so want to protect them the best I can

I got a white crown on a back tooth on the NHS a few months ago. He never suggested a metal one.

GentleSloth · 30/05/2024 21:50

@MizzMarple whereabouts are you based?

OP posts:
Sadforthem23 · 30/05/2024 21:55

I'm south east and due to have a white crown fitted in Tuesday - NHS and no mention of metal or paying extra. Have a white temporary crown at the moment, whilst they make the permanent one.

South East

modgepodge · 30/05/2024 22:07

I got a white crown on the NHS in about 2012. It is a bottom tooth though which I think is more obvious than the top ones so maybe that’s why.

Fgfgfg · 30/05/2024 22:14

White crown fitted last week and the temporary one was white as well. No mention of metal crown.

Fgfgfg · 30/05/2024 22:15

West Midlands

Hellodarknessmyfriend · 30/05/2024 22:17

No. East Midlands. I had to pay for a molar white crown privately a few months' ago. Zirconia.

QuickDraining · 30/05/2024 22:19

More tooth removed. They never told me that! I'd have been happy with metal.

GentleSloth · 31/05/2024 06:11

Thanks everyone. I’ll see what they suggest. Did you all have these on root canalled teeth?

OP posts:
Fgfgfg · 31/05/2024 07:39

My tooth was broken but I also have another crown over a root canal.
