Need something for rehydration

Hi mumsnet, I've got some horrible virus at the moment and I've been constantly blowing my nose for the past few days. So much so that my skin is drying up and sore on my entire face and my hands and my eyes are swollen. All seem to be signs of dehydration. I've been constantly sipping squash day and night so I'm surprised by this. My partner went to the chemist to see if they can give me something for rehydration fast but they said no just keep sipping water. I honestly thought there was stuff you could buy. Does anyone know of anything?

I don’t know about rehydration salts but an isotonic sports drink might help. But I don’t like them so I drink coconut water which I think really helps rehydrate me.

I have always taken re-hydration powders in sachets that I picked up from the supermarket/chemist.

My Tesco’s sells rehydration tablets in tubes similar to those vitamin c tabs (Berocca or similar). They are found alongside products tackling diarrhoea.

Also agree with above poster - coconut water is good.

Watermelon is also excellent to rehydrate.

HappyHolidai · 27/05/2024 11:01

Milk is pretty good, and agree about coconut water.

Also use lots of moisturiser on your skin. Hopefully the cold will pass and you will balance out soon.

There's a sachet specifically for this called Diorhylate, in surprised they did point you in the right direction. Hope you feel better soon.

I agree about getting some sports drinks or picking something like Dioralyte up from a supermarket. You probably don't need any more than water and a dab of Vaseline around your nose to protect the skin, but psychologically it can give you a boost if you feel like you're doing something extra.

Are you having diarrhoea and/or vomiting also, or just blowing your nose? It would seem unusual to lose SO much fluid that you are dehydrated, when still sipping fluids. Sorry if TMI, but what colour is your urine? First thing in the morning it can be light yellow, but through the day, it ideally should be almost clear. If its darker then you do need more fluids.

  • Chicken soup has inflammatory properties and as long as its not overly salty, will also help rehydrate
  • Pharmacies do sell dioralyte sachets for rehydration, but they may not have recommended them if you don't have diarrhoea or vomiting. Some supermarkets sell them too though. They can be frozen and made into an ice lolly or ice cubes to suck on.
  • Melons and cucumbers are full of water if you could tolerate nibbling on those
  • Make sure the squash is very diluted
  • Have you done a covid test?

I'd dilute down sone fruit juice (apple juice, orange juice - not diluting juice/squash) and add a pinch of salt.
Or dioralyte - but that's basically salts and sugars.
Or an isotonic sports drink.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/05/2024 13:22

If you've not got D&V it seems unlikely you'd be seriously dehydrated ... I'd be having lots of hot drinks if I had a virus and was blowing a lot, no need to 'sip'.Confused

If you really are dehydrated, then there's dioralyte and isotonic drinks or you can make your own rehydrating fluid - it's just water with the right small amounts of sugar and salt.

Dioralyte is the best known brand.

I buy DH these on an Amazon subscription because he is appalling for being dehydrated (lots of reasons including very physical job):

Thanks all for the helpful advice everyone <3 I will have a go with these suggestions.

@CJ0374 yeah surprised me too, I've had the horrible sore throat for 2 weeks but blowing my nose every 5 minutes over the weekend. It's literally dripping out. Yes urine is dark which was ones of the things that made me think I was dehydrated. Doen 2 covid tests so far, more for curiosity and both negative.

I think I'm going to call the doctors in the morning as well just to make sure nothing else is going on.
