What is going on with these eyebrows?

My daughter is 13, her eyebrows have red patches on them, the hair doesn’t really grow there. Two years ago she got her period and since then this has appeared and gotten progressively worse. Her periods are very erratic and her weight has risen rapidly, especially in the last 6-12 months.
her skin on her face is red and rough,as are her arms so it could be KP? (Skin isn’t rough on eyebrows)
I don’t know if the events are connected but it looks really bad and she’s starting to feel uncomfortable as people point it out.
has anyone had similar?
im trying to get a gp appointment but it’s proving difficult. I don’t know where to turn . I’ve tried every eczema/dermatitis/psoriasis cream I can get hold of and it doesn’t do anything.
looking at dr Google and it indicates pcos or thyroid issues. I have pcos so a possibility…
Has anyone seen this Combo of issues before?
Thanks

Hope u get the answers you need asap. Didn’t want to read and run.

regarding weight gain. Have you looked at getting her to walk a certain amount of K daily. For example I do 13,000 steps. My child same age as yours does 11,000k on a school day plus an evening walk. Her weight has reduced drastically in the last 9 months without many dietary changes. No height changes in case anyone was wondering.

BTW this does look like excema. Get her to start a daily 3 step cleansing routine. Twice a day. Someone else can suggest brands.

thank you for reading. Funnily enough she’s started couch to 5k 3/4 weeks ago so has upped her activity levels. I’ve been going with her too to encourage her getting moving more. I’ve been looking into a light weights/resistance band work out we can do together too.
she was definitely sedentary, and I’m sure that’s not helped but she doesn’t eat that much (quite fussy!) it’s more the speed of the weight gain she went from wearing age 12-13 clothes in year 7 to now in year 8 in woman’s 12-14 clothes! I’ve not weighed her as I’m trying not to draw too much attention towards the weight yet but encourage fitness and strength in the hope it does something. I’ll benefit in doing it with her too.
I feel a bit worried about broaching it and making it an awful issue, but I do t want it to affect her self esteem. Her face is puffy and really she looks unrecognisable to 2 years ago…

Dose she wax/pluck them is she does maybe stop for a while.
Or it could be some really dry skin.

Underactive thyroid causes weight gain and thinning brows

Also scaly skin and irregular periods.

Can do a blood test via GP or privately.

I was going to write the same thing.

Iwishiwereamillionaire · 24/05/2024 22:16

No waxing or plucking.
she uses cerave, La Roche posay creams for dry itchy skin.
the only thing that reduced it was when I put her on an iron supplement for 6 weeks as she was so exhausted and by week 5 we realised the eyebrows were barely red.
since coming off it they’ve come back along with very red cheeks

that’s what I wondered too,
can I request a private go to do blood tests or do I need a referral?
the last time I went with her to the drs about this they gave me emollients and steroid cream which did absolutely nothing so we stopped it as I was too worried about damaging her skin.
im worried they won’t take me seriously,

I'd definitely recommend getting thyroid checked. And don't let them tell you she's the wrong age to develop thyroid issues. It's less common at that age but often triggered by hormone changes such as pregnancy or menopause so could be triggered by puberty. Weight gain, eyebrows and puffy face sound very similar to the symptoms I had during puberty before I was eventually diagnosed.

KentInAutumn · 24/05/2024 22:23

There’s no reason they wouldn’t check her thyroid against that clinical picture if you specifically ask them to.

Sorry just remembered that a lot of “blood test by post” type places like Thriva won’t test for under 18s, probably all of them actually. So I would just ask GP. If they decline to check her thyroid, see another GP.

update:Took my 13 yo daughter to get blood tests as she’s now got severe hip pain (both sides), losing eyebrow hair, thinning hair, weight gain and erratic periods. Results came back & drs said no further investigation needed but when I look at these results I’m not sure I agree!
Thyroid serum TSH level 2.04mu/L  [range: 0.35-5.0]
Serum free T4 level 12.3 Pmol/L [range: 9.0. - 20.0]

serum ferritin level 38ugl[range:20.00-275]

Serum iron level 9.0umol/
Transferrin saturation index 12% (below low reference limit)

Can anyone help me with what I do next? Do I change her diet, ask for another appointment with Drs?

Please can someone advise me as to me these don’t seem great but because they’re borderline low we should ignore it and the symptoms ?

thanks…feel really deflated but no definitive answer, so frustrating.

So frustrating. I'd definitely be supplementing her with iron as she's right at the bottom of the range.
