Bleeding after sex for months

I've been experiencing bleeding after sex for the last couple of months, it was never usually too bad but I've noticed it getting a lot worse over the last month. It happens every single time but I think I just put it down to my copper coil (I got the coil put in last January). It was when I realised today that I have been having to change the sheets after (sorry major TMI), that there could potentially be something quite worrying going on. I can't believe I have ignored it for this long!

Does anyone have any experience in a similar situation? Trying not to scare myself but I am quite worried.

Just book a dr appointment

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 24/05/2024 20:30

You need to speak to a dr, it could be anything.

When was your last smear?

BirthdayRainbow · 24/05/2024 20:31

Yep, doctor appointment is necessary. Next week.

ArcticBells · 24/05/2024 20:32

It may be something as simple as a little polyp on the cervix causing the bleeding. Best to get it checked out

I have been trying to wrack my brain, it was either last year (but I don't^^ think she took one at the time) when I got my coil fitted or early 2021.

Typically, I only realised this could be an issue at 5pm on a Friday so I'll need to wait until Tuesday before I can get an appointment. Trying not to work myself up.

Could be the coil or could be fibroids - could be many benign things - I had bleeding after sex for a while during fibroids (only way I found out) and had them removed. It was quick and painless. Well done for booking an appointment.

Edited

I never thought of that actually, it's amazing how quickly these things can appear! Thank you, I'll keep the thread updated, hoping for a simple/easily resolved explanation!

It may be cervical ectropia. Cells which are normally inside the cervical canal displaying on the cervix. Harmless but prone to bleeding when eg brushed during smear test or bumped during sex etc

I went for an appointment today, the GP said there was nothing obvious to see that would be causing the bleeding & that my cervix looked healthy so she wasn't concerned that it is cancer causing the bleeding. She took some swaps & has referred me to gyne & she wasn't sure but said the referral could take 'a couple of months'. I just find it a bit odd that the referral is going to take so long & that she could say because everything looked ok that she isn't concerned. Hopefully she's right but it left me feeling a bit like it's just another routine thing.

I wouldn't wait for a referral but go to a sexual health clinic. The GP should have put you on a two week wait IMO. GPs are rubbish at sexual health so I never go there but straight to the sexual health clinic - it's usually easy to get an appointment, you don't need a referral and you'll see a gynaecologist.

I get bleeding after sex sometimes. I had it investigated and they said I have an irritable cervix! It didn't need any treatment and sometimes it doesn't happen for ages and then I'll have several occurances of it in a short time.

I had my referral to gynae and had an internal ultrasound (fun!) and that is when they found the fibroids. I think I waited about a month, maybe there is a backlog that your GP is aware of? Or it’s an outside guess and could be a lot sooner. When you get your appointment date you are well within your rights to give them a ring and ask to be considered for short notice cancellations.

Unexplained bleeding should be checked quicker. I had a call after I had reported mine and had a scan and biopsy within the week. This wasn't bleeding after sex though this was just bleeding.

I hope you don't have to wait too long and it is all okay.

I have this. It's harmless but caused a lot of bleeding after sex plus bleeding in all my pregnancies too. Hopefully it's something like this and nothing to worry about

twodoorsup · 28/05/2024 21:02

When I asked about the likelihood of it being something 'sinister' she said because there was nothing to see from looking that it would likely mean my referral wouldn't be treated as urgently, but also said it's not likely to be cervical ectropia because she couldn't see any places the bleeding would be coming from. It all sounded like she just didn't know, which I understand, but left me wondering why I wouldn't be seen sooner. Also the fact the bleeding is getting worse. Hoping so too, I haven't got myself worried yet but it 'a few months' seems a bit too long for something like this.
