Worried about weight loss

Dear Mumsnet, I am generally very healthy apart from I suffer with IBS, I have done since I was a teenager, I'm in my fifties and try to eat healthily apart from a bit of an addiction to chocolate.
I have been slim my entire life and never really gained weight even after having my two children, also at various times I have been too slim largely due to my IBS.
However here is the thing, over the past year or so my weight has slowly declined to the point I am now underweight.
For context I'm 5'8 and 8st 9lb, surely this is the time our metabolism slows down and we gain weight easily however for myself it has become more and more difficult to maintain my weight and I'm now self conscious about my thin body.
Should I be worried? Would you go to doc with this?

I would go to your GP. I am sure the advice with unexplained weight loss or gain is to seek medical advice.
Do you feel generally well?

ILikePistachios · 24/05/2024 09:10

Definitely go to the doctors, any other symptoms? Thirsty or weeing more than usual? I'd be worried about diabetes

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/05/2024 09:11

Absolutely seek medical advice.

AnnaMagnani · 24/05/2024 09:18

I would absolutely go with unintentional weight loss.

I've just been diagnosed with an overactive thryroid after months of weight loss and feeling sick when eating. Got more tests coming up but so glad they figured it out.

Annoyingly a friend fell out with me after saying I was deliberately skinny and clearly putting effort into losing weight then pretending I wasn't! I found out the other day and have been so tempted to message her...

Anyway, it's not fun and very scary when you can't understand what is going on. I also have dry eyes and a lot of other symptoms that all add up to feeling rubbish. Go and get bloods done!

I'm sorry this has happened to you peanut, however I have often been accused of the same by one particular friend however my family who live with me know the effort I put into eating more and more to maintain my weight. I hope you start feeling well soon x

Yes I do feel generally ok, although I have a virus at the moment.

I do eat a lot of chocolate and I find that makes me very thirsty. I'm sort of desperate to gain weight and just the other evening I choked down a large bag of Cadbury buttons after dinner finishing the pack even though towards the end of was making me feel a bit sick with sugar overload.

It was such a horrid conversation, especially as she knew I'd felt unwell for months. Anyway, she showed her true colours!

Hope you get yours sorted out. Mine has been being tempered by lack of B12 so I was super energetic then huge slumps and needing naps. I think that's why it took so long to get diagnosis as it wasn't clear cut.

Good luck!

Tropics4 · 24/05/2024 09:56

I think actually I will go to the doc as the consensus is it wouldn't be unreasonable to just ask for some investigations. Thankyou all so much. Xx

Definitely see GP. I'd be doing bloods and also revisiting the IBS diagnosis looking at coeliac and IBD too.

BlueChampagne · 24/05/2024 12:44

I am the same height and weight as you and realise I have lost about 3kg mostly in muscle thanks to the menopause.

Yes I did think about IBD, but I take medication to control my stomach, when it's sort of out of control then I would expect to lose weight but I'm doing ok at the moment.

That could be a factor, I had a spinal surgery 13 months ago and my exercise isn't what it was, thankyou.
