Hello one and all.

I have suffered from hayfever most of my adult life and I have only ever had over the counter medication but in the last few years it's gotten terrible and I've had to go for prescription - But the prescription medication makes me feel dizzy and sleepy.

As I'm writing this now, I'm trying not to fall asleep. I'm unsure what to do, I cannot stop taking this medication as my Hayfever is terrible (itchy runny eyes, sneezing all day long, difficulty breathing) but I cannot be falling asleep at 8 pm when it's my time with the kids when they aren't at their Dads.

I've got a doctor's appointment but its not for a fortnight

Do any of you suffer with Hayfever? If so what do you use? Thanks in advance loves

Fexofenadine is now available over the counter. It is a HUGE game changer. I’ve had it on prescription for years. It knocks it on the head with no drowsiness.

DS and I have both suffered badly, him more than me and was really concerned to get his sorted as he’s sitting his a-levels. GP advise we need to use a steroid based nasal spray with Fluticozone, Boots and Piroton both do a spray without a prescription needed. You need to use for several days to build up resistance, so can take along side Fexofenadine initially (these on their own do not resolve DS symptoms) Well the Fluticozone spray has been a game changer for us this year, we’re more or less free of symptoms, Fexofenandine has been dropped. We also have eye drops if our eyes start. Good luck, its miserable, hope you get sorted.

Fexo didn't work for me at all and gave me insomnia!

I take 2 Cetirizine a day, plus Opticrom eye drops, Dymista nasal spray and Clenil inhaler, with Ventolin and Piriton on top when needed.

Out of all the prescription and OTC AHs cetirizine is most effective for me. But AHs alone often aren't enough.

Perfectpots · 22/05/2024 20:51

I use steroid based nasal spray - beconase or boots equivalent and optichrom eye drops.

The otc tablets make me feel lethargic and weird.
That said my hay-fever used to be a lot worse than it is now.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 22/05/2024 20:55

I take Cetirizine, use Vividrin sodium cromoglycate eye drops several times every day, and use Pirinaze for that one week where it gets unbearable.

I was so disappointed in Fexofenadine. It was no better than Cetirizine and hard to get at the time - I had such high hopes.

steroid nasal spray & when eyes are itchy chromo (sp?) eye drops

Yes, same here with Fexo, "everyone" seemed to be suggesting it was a real game changer, but, nope.

PositiveLife · 22/05/2024 21:09

For the itchy eyes there's some wipes you can get from B&M

Muchtoomuchtodo · 22/05/2024 21:12

Ds uses fexofenadine, beconase nasal spray, murine eye drops and montelukast (was prescribed for his asthma but has been a game changer for his hayfever too).

SabbatWheel · 22/05/2024 21:18

Fexo is the only thing that works for me. Also use sodium cromoglycate eye drops and pirinase when necessary.

candragonsbepurple · 22/05/2024 21:29

Thank you to everyone suggesting eye and nasal drops but they dont work for me and the kicker here: I'm allergic to something in them.

I'm right royally fed up of my hayfever 😂

Have you had fexofenadine?
Or have you heard of the kenalog treatment? I believe you have e to pay privately but for the cost of otc medicines and prescriptions may make it worth it.
I know 2 people who it has been effective for.

Flixonase & fexofenadine here. Start a month before your hayfever usually starts.

napody · 22/05/2024 21:36

Cetirizine works for me- makes me drowsy for the first few days but then adjust and I'm fine. Can't manage without it.

Han789 · 22/05/2024 21:38

Fexofenadine for me although sadly it doesn’t seem to be non-drowsy for me, I take it in the morning and am half asleep by mid afternoon!

AnnaMagnani · 22/05/2024 21:45

Fexofenadine. Start meds well before hayfever season (unhelpful for this year but gamechanger for next)

I take cetirizine every day, and if still have symptoms take another or a fexofenadine.

TwitTwoooooooh · 22/05/2024 21:46

Another vote for fexofenadine - it has honestly changed my life since taking it! I suffered so so bad every year since Teens, one little tablet a day and I'm absolutely fine. Hurrah!
