Asthma flare and coughing up streak of blood

Hi all,

I have had a recent asthma flare up, it is usually very well controlled but I am currently on a 5 day course of steroid tablets. This morning I have been coughing a bit and coughed up a bit of blood, say 1 streak of it in a tissue when I spat phlegm out. I'm in two minds as to whether this worth seeing my GP for this? Especially as it's only a small amount or just sticking out the steroid tablets and wait and see.

I had asthma as a child but I've not had much experience of my asthma being bad as an adult so unsure of what to do and what's normal or to be expected.

Thanks so much

Yes, OP - coughing up blood should always be reported to the GP, I believe. Let them decide how serious it is. Best wishes

I coughed up blood stained phlegm a couple of years ago when I had a terrible cough and chest infection. It made sense that it was the trauma from coughing so much . If it continues then I would speak to GP.

Hi OP,

I have asthma and usually always end up coughing up streaks of blood in my phlegm whenever I have a cold/bad cough or a flare up. It's normally down to a chest infection or some form of upper respiratory infection that causes me to cough that much i end up tearing a blood vessel. I would definitely get checked out as even though it happens to me quite often I am always told any blood coughed up needs to be checked out. Hope you are doing okay X

You should definitely mention it but it’s most likely trauma from coughing causing inflammation and the steroids causing the skin to be slightly thinner than usual.

Hi all,

Thank you for the replies. I did see my GP and I also have a chest infection which could be the cause of the blood, I've an x-ray booked and antibiotics.

Thanks again.

I think that’s good news, OP. Glad you got it checked out
