What helps your migraines?

I've suddenly started getting silent/not so silent migraines with increased regularity. Had them on and off for a few years but have had 3 in the last 2 weeks. I'm waiting on a follow up Dr's appointment but have had bloods, which have been largely normal. I have been quite stressed lately and I'm approaching 40 so possibly peri menopausal. Stress does seem to be a trigger as they have started during my counselling sessions twice now.
I'm wondering what helps people, both meds and home remedies. Having them this regularly is new to me and they wipe me out for 24 hrs so I need to be able to manage them.

They always seem to be on my left side. I get, tingling in my left hand/arm, noise/smell/light sensitivity, increased tinnitus (I have it constantly anyway), flickering vision, pressure in nose and head, weird sensation in my neck (left side), off balance and find it hard to think properly. Sometimes it's like I can't get my words out. Sometimes I have a headache sometimes not.

Any advice much appreciated.

Cold and flu pills

Ice cold Coke

My daughter swears by very strong black coffee as soon as she feels them starting

2 paracetamol, 1 ibuprofen. Stand under a really hot shower, then turn it all the way cold, then back up as hot as you can stand. Then go take a nap in a dark room.
This ritual is the only thing that works for me

Sumatriptan and paracetamol together. White tiger balm rubbed in my temples and across forehead. They are the worst and usually wake up the following day with it again. They last for 3-4 days.

Uh oh, poor you! I get hormonal migraines, but they sound a bit different to yours. The only combo helping me is Zolmitriptan, Prochlorperazine and ibuprofen. White tiger balm helps me with the nausea, a cool mat, and if you can eat something, salt/caffeine can help. I keep electrolytes on me, and doctor said to take magnesium regularly - I don’t think it’s helped mine but I think it helps some people!

I think it’s one of those things where everyone is a bit different, and you just have to throw all sorts at it until you find something that works for you!

Good luck!

this is what works for me

Rizatriptan as soon as symptoms begin

If it hasn’t taken effect eat and drink. Generally fat and/or sugar can help. Cheese, cheesecake, nuts, soda, coffee with lots of sugar. Sometimes a cheeseburger

avoid artificial sweeteners at all times. Never, ever consume them in any quantity.

if the migraine takes hold, sleep it out, then once you come around, eat and drink

agoodfriendofthethree · 21/05/2024 19:47

A can of coke and eating lots of carbohydrates really helps me. Though it annoys me that it helps because generally I eat much healthier than that 😂 but it makes a massive difference if I consume those things as early on as possible. I hope you find something that helps you!

britespark1 · 21/05/2024 19:51

After many previous attempts, I’m now on daily candesartan as well as the mini pill to try and stabilise my hormones. Then on the rare occasion I can feel one starting I have Rizatriptan melts that suit me better than sumatriptan.

Sounds silly but the blue kool n soothe strips on the back of my neck really do help a lot too, as well as the 4 head sticks.

Icedlatteplease · 21/05/2024 19:51

Ice pack or, occasionally a heat pack

Avoiding perfume. Perfume sets them off

Really decent sunglasses

No alcohol or caffeine

CreatingHavoc · 21/05/2024 22:01

Some interesting suggestions here, thanks 🙂 I don't normally have caffeine but I did have a green tea today along with some ashwagandha, which seems to have lessened the effects slightly. It was an hour or so after it started though so probably left it too late. Still rough now so I'm going to try and gets a half decent sleep.

More of a preventative but—magnesium!!
preferably a quality one with different kinds in.

Reduced the intensity and frequency of mine massively
