Hi there, DS has been vomiting since yesterday breakfast time and has now started diahorrea aswell, poor sausage. The GP said to keep BFing him and giving him sips of rehydration fluid and not to bother with solids (he won't eat anything anyway).

GP says it's viral gastroenteritis, has anyone else's LO had this? How long did it last and is there anything else I should be doing? DS seems quite happy but he's my first baby so I have not got a clue what I'm doing!

Your poor DD, this virus sounds vile Will definately watch out for dehydration but luckily DS has managed to keep some fluid down for a few hours at a time so is OK at the mo.

riven, cam I ask whether you gave your children any solid food or not? NHS direct told me to give DS his normal solids but GP said not to?

DD ended up in hospital with it too. (only 2 days for her though) She was sick for about a week after. I'd avoid solids for a day (although maybe no harm in offering them if you don't mind them coming back up). (She was 22m btw.)

my little boy has this aswell, he started being sick in the early hours of Monday morning, he stopped being sick after about 12 hours, he also had a few messy nappies. I thought he would start to pick up the next day but although he was'nt sick any more he was very lethargic and hot. I called nhs 24 who sent an ambulance to take us to hospital. It turned out that he was dehydrated and had a high temp, 38.5. He was put on a drip overnight and the next day they took him off to see if he would start drinking but he just did'nt want to so they had to put a tube in his nose to get fluids into him. Thankfully he picked up a little and he was allowed home yesterday but he's still not right, still very miserable and tired. Its been such a scary time.

Its good that your LO is drinking as thats very important to avoid dehydration. Hope he continues to improve and that you manage to escape this horrible bug.

My ds(13mths)had this a couple of weeks ago and interesting about your differing advice from NHS direct and GP as I had this as well. Lady at NHS direct implied that what the GP advised (fasting, fluids only) is out of date and that there is no evidence to suggest that not giving food speeds recovery. She said, if he wants food then offer it, it doesnt matter if he brings it back up (well, unless its on the carpet!!).

We offered him dry foods (cooked plain pasta, toast, dry biscuits) as well as milk. He was being sick and had diarreah for about 4 days. My friends baby also ended up in hosp with dehydration so keep an eye on the temp and also general behaviour of your baby (if they go limp, rolling eyes, feverish etc this is a bad sign, obviously!, but they can deteriorate quite quickly so best to check every few hours).

ds had it last week (he is 14 months old).... vomitted everything up for a day, then got very feverish, dehydrated and stopped eating or drinking anything. Had to take him to a&e as he got very drowsy and floppy. He was re hydrated there by feeding him 10ml of dioralyte every 10 minutes by syringe orally, and eventually sorted his fever out w baby nurofen (calpol didn't work). He then had a few days of EVIL nappies, and we took him off milk. We let him eat little and often and kept a careful eye on his fluid intake until things returned to normal (all fine within about 5 days again).

orangina · 04/04/2008 17:21

Wouldn't give him solids if it is going to make him vomit. Most important thing is to keep him hydrated. If he will keep down fluids, don't risk them coming up by adding solids in as well....

Gosh just came home and logged on again, thank you for all your advice. It sounds like some of your LOs were really ill. I have kept DS off the solids today as every time he's had something he's been sick. He's had a few BFs and only 1 came back up again. he's also sipping Diarylite mixed with water and apple juice every half hour. Jojo's maman, that's exactly what NHS direct told me about solid food aswell - strange that it differs from the GP's advice isn't it?

Kaylasmum, your poor little boy, is he feeling any better tonight?

Breastfeeding absloutely best thing for a porryl baby as your GP recognises unlike the poor MNer who was told to stop b/feeding and give Ribena instead by some idiot medic.

zebedee1 · 04/04/2008 20:42

moondog did that really happen? My GP actually said BF was the best thing for him, he's a good egg.

hi zebedee,

My ds has started to improve this evening, he's still not too keen on drinking anything other than having a breastfeed. He actually smiled and laughed a little todayI hope things are ok with your DS.

zebedee1 · 04/04/2008 22:19

That's good news Kaylasmum, he must be on the mend if he's smiling again! It's such a worry when they're ill isn't it? DS is asleep and has managed to keep all BFs and diarylite down since luchtime so fingers crossed he'll be a bit better tomorrow.

It was a long saga with Mner who had it said to her taken up by Chief Exec. of Trust or something.
