CT scan showed white matter

So I have had a severe headache for a week, and took myself to a&e where they did a CT, which showed white matter.

They don't know what's caused it until they do a MRI which they can only do on weekdays.

I'm terrified. Any one have any experience?

White matter is a normal part of the brain so I’m not sure what you mean by they “found” white matter.

Try not to panic. I have an ‘abnormal brain scan’ on my medical record which no-one’s ever been able to explain and has caused me no issues. My GP said possibly I had a head injury as a child but neither me or my mum recall anything like that, so I’ve just left it.
If it’s anything serious they will pick it up on the MRI but it isn’t always a terrible outcome.

just googling rather than knowing anything in particular - it kind of looks like they can find lesions in the white matter and it doesn’t mean anything in particular, some people just have them.

if it helps they found a mass in my mums brain during a ct earlier this week and they were very clear about it definitely being a mass, that it was looking like a secondary tumour from the large mass they found in her lung.

They did confirm with an MRI, but, there was no, we’ll need to see what that is or vagueness at all.

So I’d assume if they are being non specific it’s because it’s nothing hugely obvious and worrying, just something they think might be better checking.

I had this about 7 years or so back and it showed white matter and they phoned me to tell me and put cause on the report as either migraines or TIA (Mini-stroke). The MRI did not show anything further. I was diagnosed with breast cancer after that but nothing further has ever been found on the CT head done later (about 6 months ago) and no issues with heart. So basically it turned out fine for the head/brain things. Its interesting about the head injury as I did have a head injury from being attacked by a stranger when I was younger. They thought migraine was unlikely due to my age, normally picked up much younger.

It's normal to have some white spots as we age. Also, the newest, super performing machines can pick up things that look like white spots but are not.

The question is whether the size and numbers are of any concern.
