Best Treatment for Fungal Nail Infection

I've been treating my toe nail since August last year with Curanail and it hasn't got any better, or worse for that matter. I'd say it's a pretty mild infection too, but it has now spread to both big toe nails.

Can anyone recommend a treatment that has worked for them please?

I’m taking the tablets - terbinafine. GP said I have to see healthy growth at the base before stopping them.

Podiatrist also recommended Vicks vapo rub a couple of times a week. She also trimmed and filed them down a lot so it was worth doing that at start of treatment. One toenail is particularly bad - otherwise I prob wouldn’t have bothered w the tablets (I’ve had one blood test already and all fine).

This is all fab, I'll try anything, @VeronicaBeccabunga stupidly I have never thought of the antifungal spray for prevention.

NippyCrab · 19/05/2024 10:13

@LightSpeeds I had no idea about castor oil thank you I have a bottle.

A few years ago I saw the doctor who prescribed Terbinafine for infected toenails and one thumbnail.

I got half way through the prescription (4 weeks or so) when I came over in a full body red rash and so immediately stopped taking the tablets and told the doctor and I now have a Terbinafine allergy on my medical records. However the infection had by then gone from the thumbnail (still all clear) and largely gone from the toenails. The toenails slowly became fully reinfected.

Nowadays I slather Vicks on fairly regularly which makes them look better but doesn’t in my experience provide a cure.

Ive tried the UV light things but it doesn’t seem to do anything.

Hiya. Can I just ask was your infection all the way up to the top of the nail matrix? I also hate mine and have tried everything. Nothing works. I feel mine got worse once the podiatrist filed it all off because then it starting further and further! Before that it wasn’t on the whole nail!

I had fungal nails for the best part of 20 years and it really upset me. It was murder trying to disguise my thickened black/yellow green(yes really) nails with copious amounts of nail polish every summer.

I tried every single thing going, no matter how whacky it seemed. I had a bit of improvement sometimes that my nails went crusty yellow instead of black but it was dreadful.

I was nervous about taking the tablets for them because I understood that they can affect your liver, but in the end I just went for it. I am in pretty good general health.

So, last Summer I began my anti-fungus journey and... this year, for the first time in years, my toenails look normal again!

I know it sounds pathetic and shallow but it really got to me that I had manky toenails and it's lovely now looking down at my clear and healthy toenails.

Long winded way of saying 'try the tablets' with the caveat that you have to be in good health and have monthly testing to check that you're not having a bad reaction.

Good luck OP whatever you choose.

Hi @codingmum if I'm understanding you properly, you mean the whole nail from the very bottom to very top? And yes, my infection was every surface of every nail on one foot. Actually I have an update: some of the infection came back again 😥. I then threw away all my shoes and socks and tried laser treatment on the infected nails because I started to get worried about the length of time I had been on the tablets. The laser treatment was semi-effective and now (after a blood test for my liver which came back fine) I'm back on Terbinafine. Apparently there is nothing 100% effective, but I will persevere with the tablets again. Have you tried laser treatment? Yours doesn't sound as bad as mine, if it wasn't affecting the whole nail. I had to pay privately for the laser treatment.

Thanks for your update and sorry to hear it’s come back! I’ve had filing down and cold laser but doesn’t seem to be killing the infection. I’m now going to give a sample as it’s my whole toenail and she thinks it’s affected the nail matrix. Just wondered if it could work if it’s that severe and if my big toenail will ever grow back normal again?! Making me so sad.

Cathbrownlow · 11/07/2025 13:21

Oh I know how you feel. My laser I think was hot laser (is there such a thing? I didn't know there was more than one type) It certainly felt hot while the practitioner was doing it. Don't give up hope! Are you ok to have Terbinafine tablets? or did you already try them? Us fungus feet sisters have to stick together 😂

yes we do! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I haven’t tried teenage before. The laser promoted growth of the nail so it was growing quite fast, but not growing clear and still infected. So now I think I need the tablets. It’s also all filed off so can’t even wear any nail varnish over it for the summer. I wouldn’t even mind if it grew back discoloured but in normal shape. At least that way I could paint and hide it!

I meant terafine!

i’ve been having Lúnula laser treatments since september and have started seeing a difference in the last two months.

i genuinely don’t understand those that say they apply something and see a difference quickly, because i believe you have to wait for the nail to grow in order to see a difference and they grow very slowly.

the one difference i saw after the second session is that my nail stopped hurting, which it used to do at night.

its not cheap, but after trying all treatments out there, i think its going to be worth the money.

i also have to apply a drop of Mykosept every day and spray my shoes with a disinfectant spray to avoid reinfection.

Oh, and also either put socks in the drier or iron them to kill the infection too.

Hi Brooklyn70, I have also been having Lanula cold laser which is meant to be very effective, but mine had just been growing infected still! Was your infection all the way to the top (cuticle)?

Brooklyn70 · 11/07/2025 15:08

@codingmum

the infection itself started in a top corner, say in the left top quarter, but that side of the nail was dark all the way down to the cuticle.

I’ve had it for like 18 years and it’s now started growing ‘clean’ and the side of the infection, which had darkened, is clearer now.

i also have a straight dark line in that nail, which i was worried could be cancer, but went to dermatologist and said it was probably related to the infection.

2I’m wondering if that will eventually clear too.

how long have you been doing it?

Teachingquestion · 11/07/2025 15:30

if it's mild, I can heartily recommend Tea tree oil

I had thickening down the sides of my big toe and my little toenail was all thick. I started the following- after every bath shower/ swim i would trim or file the nail all over, getting rid of the thickened stuff. Then neat tea tree oil on twice a day.
It's totally cured the little toe- back to normal and the big toe is much improved. It's taken a year. I had a small fungal rash on my hip - on the first day it itched, i dabbed a neat bit of Tea tree oil on and it went overnight!

Greysowhat · 23/09/2025 21:18

Half and half tea tree and euclyptus oil applied daily. You can file away the surface of the nail every so often too just to let the oil get in a bit deeper. Worked for me.

SisterMargaretta · 23/09/2025 21:21

Lamisil Once. I had a fungal nail for nearly five years and this finally cleared it.
