My son (19 months) has a UTI. Rare in boys? Anyone else?

Hi lovely Mumsnet folk, my son (19 months) has been ill all week with a temperature in the 40s and vomiting. Yesterday they dipped a sample and told me he had a UTI. Has anyone else's son had one and it cleared up with antibiotics without further issues. Everything I've read tells me a) it's rare for boys to get them and that we should of been referred for a scan (we weren't) b) it may keep happening now I'm feeling quite anxious for him. Has anyone else's son had one which just cleared up with antibiotics and had no major issues. Did you also have a referral for a scan? Thanks x

Not quite the same but I would push for a scan. My DS has a dilated kidney that was only picked up on a pregnancy growth scan. He’s on low level antibiotics daily to avoid UTIs and has scans to monitor it. It’s not a big deal and he’ll probably grow out of it but having had one uti you should push for a scan to rule out any similar issues. X

My Middle son had a kidney infection at four weeks old. IV antibiotics and a hospital stay required. No reoccurrence and structural or functional cause identified. I was worried for years it would happen again.

My DS had one at 3 weeks, hospital stay and IV antibiotics for a few weeks. Delays in the original diagnosis resulted in scarring on his kidneys which is monitored and he has annual BP checks too. No further reoccurrence though.

If it doesn't clear up after antibiotics it might be worth asking your doctor to investigate the possibility of him having Urethral valves which can develop in boys.

My son had continual UTIs and problems draining urine properly. Luckily for us they were slow growing, and discovered when we moved to another country and he had an ultrasound which found his bladder wall thick and almost square. Turned out that emptying his bladder was extremely painful so he would hold on, leak and have accidents.

My 6 year old had one - cleared up well and no further issues though I appreciate he is older.

Hi, I know this is old but I wondered how you son got on?
my 3yo has just been diagnosed with a UTI and he is in pain when he goes for a wee and a few minutes after! He’s on antibiotics but dr never mentioned scans and the antibiotics are only for a week?

My baby boy had one and in my area they automatically refer for a scan. It did show an issue with the connection between the bladder and kidney and he had prophylactic antibiotics (trimethoprim) for a few years till around 4.

At that scan he was fine and no longer needed it.

They do it because repeat kidney infections can impact blood pressure when older. His uncle had lots as a child and does have blood pressure issues in his 40s, despite being relatively active and healthy.

They're actually quite obsessed with testing children's wee here and if you get sent to an and e with a temperature via out of hours they do just get a urine sample. Iirc even if its croup 😆

You could request but if it's his first they may not see a reason. If he gets more I would push for it.

This area works differently for some reason.

Hey @Atypicalmumm he got on okay. Between 3 months and 2.5 he had either a persistent infection which kept coming back and wouldn't go away or about 4 UTIs. The doctors weren't entirely sure if it was separate infections or they were all somehow linked. It was very tiring and his temperature shot up to 41 degrees when he had them. He went blue to the high temp so we ended up in a and e a few times. Ibroprophen helped to bring the temp down better than infant calpol but we staggered them. He cycled through about 4 different antibiotics as the common ones didn't work in the end something called nitrofuratin or something like that seemed to work. We were referred for an ultrasound and have another consultation to check progress in about 6 months. Apparently it can just be something they grow out of but if he has had it a few times it may be worth asking you GP if he needs a scan to rule out any kidney scarring. Even if he does have scarring I think they can can live a happy normal life but it is something to try and avoid! Good luck, it's very hard. And godspeed getting the urine samples. The staff were very good but after two lots of antibiotics weren't working a nurse suggested the healthcare team rang the trust's micorbiologist and that was when we finally got recommended one that works as there are different strains of UTIs, some harder to treat than others. His was a less common strain of E.coli x

My ds had a uti. He was about 11 or 12.
Didn't show like a normal uti. He woke up in raised rashes and feeling poorly. GP sent him to A and E querying meningitis. Turned out to be a uti. He is 14 now, no further issues. Cleared up with antibiotics
