Crap! I’ve just burned myself badly with an ice pack

I honestly don’t know what to do. I burned myself with the oven then put an ice pack on it and wrapped it. When I took the ice pack off my inner arm was bright red. Now it looks like this!!!! I’ve basically burned it twice I think. The original burn was just a very small area 🙈

what do I do next?

It now feels hot.

Wrap it with cling film.

Don't put anything on it. (Like cream or gel) That looks really sore!!

RookieMa · 16/05/2024 16:51

This is something to see a GP or walk in medical centre about

If it gets any worse than this ie becomes open or infected seek medical advice immediately

If you feel unwell ie flu like symptoms at any stage in the next few days or weeks and it still a wound see A&E and get put in antibiotics immediately. It shouldn't come to that at all but do it if it does ok. not look after wounds can turn to sepsis. Don't be alarmed at this stage though

RookieMa · 16/05/2024 16:52

It's not open yet so all good

Keep taking daily photos

NuffSaidSam · 16/05/2024 16:54

If it still feels hot run under cool water (not ice cold) for ages and ages.

Don not wrap in cling film if it's still hot!!

Doing that now. I’m such an idiot

The advice is if it is a burn bigger than a 50pence piece, you should seek medical advice.

Looks sore. Cool water as pp said in the meantime.

OldTinHat · 16/05/2024 16:59

If it were me, I'd pop to the walk in centre. Or a pharmacy. Looks very sore.

Auvergne63 · 16/05/2024 16:59

Put it under the tap for 20 minutes. When cool down, wrap it in cling film.
I would go to the pharmacy and have it checked if the burn area is bigger than the palm of your hand.
Boots sells a gel for burn which provides relief from the pain.

Cadela · 16/05/2024 17:00

Burns that size need medical attention, have you got a walk in near you?

As pp have said, wrap in cling film and don’t put anything on it! You need to keep a REALLY close eye on it re infection signs.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 16/05/2024 17:00

You need to seek medical attention promptly as you've added frozen skin of unknown depth to a burn of unknown depth.

olderbutwiser · 16/05/2024 17:02

No ice on burns (but you know that now)
20 mins tepid water
Do NOT WRAP it in clingfilm, lay strips of clingfilm over it to protect it and if you are lucky reduce the pain

Burns and scalds

Burns and scalds are damage to the skin caused by heat. Both are treated in the same way.

Echo running under water until its cooled

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 16/05/2024 20:50

Thanks guys. Is looking a lot better now. I think it will be fine in the morning. I very stupidly took the advice of my OH when I was doing the right thing initially and he told me to put an ice pack on it. I should have ignored him.

OP posts:
Garman · 16/05/2024 20:52

Did you put the ice pack on your bare skin, you didn’t wrap it in any barrier fabric?

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 16/05/2024 22:11

Nope. I was rushing and knew I should wrap it in something but didn’t. Honestly that’s what rushing from one thing to another to another to another does to you. You make stupid decisions when you know better.

OP posts:
longdistanceclaraclara · 16/05/2024 22:17

Don't wrap it. I did similar to my foot at Christmas. Ignored it, had a full thickness burn, dr sent me straight off to get it dressed properly, it only fully healed a couple of weeks ago.

Get it sorted!

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 16/05/2024 22:23

Buy your DH a voucher for a first aid course for his birthday! In all seriousness, if you have children a first aid course would be a good plan for you both. It can really help you to feel in control in an emergency situation. I do hope your arm is better soon!

Solonelyy · 16/05/2024 22:29

Never put ice on a burn as that will make it blister. And if you do put cling film on make sure it’s very loose, don’t wrap it tight. The idea of cling film is to keep it clean and stop anything sticking to it. If you use a fluffy/fabric dressing you run the risk of fluff or the fabric getting stuck to the burn

RookieMa · 17/05/2024 17:17

@EvangelicalAboutButteredToast

How's it looking today OP ?

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 17/05/2024 22:06

Both burns are completely gone! I’m actually very surprised. Absolutely no sign of the first burn either. Bizarre.
