Vaginal pain but tests clear

I had sex with my long term partner and I developed burning pain and urinary urgency. The GP has tested for thrush, UTI, gonorrhea, chlamydia, BV - all clear. So they’ve basically just shrugged and said we can’t help you because there’s nothing wrong.

This has happened a few times in the past and I’ve been able to fix it with thrush medication. But I’ve tried over the counter thrush medication and it didn’t work.

I’m in absolute agony. I can’t sleep and I’m sobbing in pain, and they’ve just said there’s nothing they can do.

How old are you? If you are menopausal (peri or post) then it could be something like vaginal atrophy (it may be called something else now but GP should know what it is) It is quite common and apparently under diagnosed in many women and not as scary as it sounds!

It is usually treated with a course of pessaries (Vagirux) that are inserted into the vagina (you do it nightly at home). I think the treatment can continue for as long as you need it.

Could it be cystitis?

One of the tests was a UTI test which was clear.

The same is happening to me - on top of that I'm pregnant, so Drs don't want to prescribe me anything :( It's awful, and I'm going out of my mind with it

Batgin · 16/05/2024 16:34

Have you been to a&e - I was told to after my GP basically rinsed their hands of me. I've seen gyne there who have put me on some different antibiotics, and given me some numbing gel that they use for catherters. They've also told me if it doesn't improve, go back to a&ea and they will get urology to see me.

Have you talked yo your Dr about chronic UTI, as they don't always show up on cultures or urine dip tests.

You need to have further tests for things like lichen planus which can be autoimmune related. They should be referring you to gynaecology.

You can also try an oestrogen cream regardless of how old you are - you can buy them over the counter and it won’t do any harm either way if you don’t need it but if you do it could make a big difference. If you are around 40ish it may be the decline in oestrogen which is giving you issues and you can ask for HRT and Ovestin on prescription. (Google Ovestin and vaginal atrophy).

I had this during all my pregnancies, it went after I had my babies each time. The midwife said it was linked to hormones changes.

OP I also have this currently and it is due to peri menopause. How old are you ? I'm 42. I'm waiting for GP to see if I can have vaginal pessaries to help (think it's called local HRT?).

Batgin · 16/05/2024 18:07

@specialk9 was it a constant UTI feeling? Like my urethra always feels like this burning pain, and I need the toilet every hour, sometime it feels I need it straight after going.

It's so so painful 😣

Batgin · 16/05/2024 18:09

It's my 4th pregnancy, and never had anything like this 😣

Ovestin is much better than the pessaries as you can apply it externally as well as use the applicator to apply it internally. If you’re very low on oestrogen your vagina will be dry and you’ll struggle to dissolve the pessaries (at least this was my experience, it may not be the same for everyone).

I’m 44. My GP said my problems aren’t menopause. I have other issues as well as this - heavy periods, muscular pain, twitching, dry eyes.

GP is wrong. All those things can be signs of menopause. You need a second opinion.

I went to A&E. The doctor did a urine dip test and said I have a severe UTI. He was aghast that they didn’t just do a dip test immediately as soon as I presented at the surgery with symptoms a few weeks ago.

I said but the GP sent away a urine sample and it was clear? He said that can be for several reasons including cross contamination or not testing quickly enough so it goes stale. He said even if it’s clear we know that tests aren’t 100% accurate so we can treat you based on symptoms and see if it helps.

This is not what my GP said. They basically shrugged and told me to go away, and suggested it might be psychological.

I meant to comment on this yday but got distracted
I was going to say I have had many bad uti which have apparently shown no infection even when the sample itself was pink with blood
So I'm not surprised at your update
UTI's are the worse , I hope you feel better soon
