Supaventricular tachycardia (svt) any tips to stop palpitations

Dartmoorcheffy · 15/05/2024 20:01

I've had this infrequently for over 30 years, sometimes it's for a few seconds and other times it can last a few hours. Had ecgs dozens of times and other tests and it was confirmed as svt.

I'm not too stressed at the moment just can't get it to jolt back to normal.

Tried breathing exercises, coughing, pushing down as if to poo. Nothings working. I can feel trapped wind gurgling around so know its caused by that pushing on the vegus nerve .

Any fellow sufferers with tips would be greatly appreciated.

I make sure I stay as hydrated as possible, cut down the caffeine including chocolate, reduce sugar and either stay away from alcohol entirely or specifically white wine and Prosecco

and lying on one side rather than the other helps!

Yeah coffee can trigger it (tea is much worse), any artificial red colouring, aspartame, vodka (but not gin bizarrely), and the main one is catching my breath when I turning or bending. Did it in the walk in fridge tonight at 6pm and that set this off. Atghhh.. its driving me mad as I need to do stuff tonight too.

Blow a balloon up. It really works to stop them.

A fellow sufferer here!

I have this too, you have my sympathy. Sometimes it's obvious what's triggered it, and sometimes I've no clue. I was told I had to go to A&E if it lasts more than an hour though

Drink ice cold water, and/or get as cold as possible. This used to work for me (before I had radio-frequency ablation which totally cured it).

I had really bad palpitations and then started to take 300mg co-q10 a day. Now I have them very rarely.

It sounds like you pretty much know all the tricks. I was told to head to A&E if it went on more than 15 minutes.

Sorry I can’t help but interesting about the link to trapped wind. I was diagnosed a couple of years ago and I swear it’s linked to my ibs and is worse in the lead up to and after a bowel movement (sorry TMI!🫢)

Found my propranolol, took 2 x 80mg and I'm thankfully OK now. That was a tiring 3 hours.

Blow our into a balloon while sitting up in bed and then after doing that for the longest breath you can manage, immediately drop flat on your back with your legs up in the air for maybe 30-60 seconds (get some help if you have it to hold your legs up as the whole manoeuvre needs to be speedy!
