I was just wondering whether anyone had tonsils removed as adults ? How bad is the pain ?

I currently am
in agony with tonsillitis , can't sleep as swallowing hurts and antibiotics didn't kick in yet . Just terrible pain , i had even worse in 2021 but not sure whether it was tonsillitis or strep a as i didn't go GP just had telephone consultation and antibiotics too.

The pain is excruciating , maybe i should ask to get my tonsils removed it's 2nd infection and worst pain ever .

Also im so hungry but how do you suppose to eat , tried a bit of cheese with cherry tomato and nearly passed out from pain when food hit the throat

TIA

DD had hers removed last year aged 19 after months of stubborn, constant tonsillitis - the consultant was very honest and warned her that she would be miserable and hate him for taking them out for the first 2 weeks!

In reality although it was very unpleasant for the most part the pain was usually quite manageable. Just have to make sure to really keep on top of painkillers (good ones - don’t let them fob you off with just paracetamol) and eat + drink as normally as possible (which is hard!) as this speeds up recovery. Lots of ice lollies and ice packs on hand as well.

For her it was definitely worth it, it’s been 18 months now and she’s only been ill once when pre-op it was more like every other week

There's no way they'll remove them for only 2 infections in 3 years! Unless you've had complications.

Even though the pain is horrendous and I fully sympathise.

Just keep an eye out for the warning signs of a quinsy.

Just seeing that you’ve only had 2 infections in 3 years - honestly there’s absolutely no way that any ENT would even consider removing them. We went private with DD and even then she had to have 9 infections in a year to fit the criteria for tonsillectomy. It’s really not an operation to take lightly

My son used to get about 3 infections a year, for 2 years, GP said next time he would refer him to have tonsils out. Next infection was abroad on holiday, so didn’t count, but fortunately they seemed to stop. There is a spray called difflam which really helps the throat. Soup and yoghurts were the only things he could eat when it was particularly bad.

Okay thank you everyone who replied I had less painful tonsillitis that i didn't bother going to GP, so about 4 times in 3 years .
It was mild enough that only spray heped and painkillers / salt water rinse

not thinking straight atm as in agony , didn't sleep or eat for few days

No sprays , lozenges help ( maybe for 10 mins and only taking edge off )

I'm just waiting on antibiotics to kick it , it s day 2 today of me taking them .

it's way too extreme to think of removing tonsils ofcourse , i wouldn't want to do that
It's just now i'm sitting crying feeling sorry for myself and googling all possible options to prevent this in the future :( X
